Since 'functional' seems to be more important than 'elegant' here, why not throw something together yourself, using e.g. a car radio with usb/sd ports, a couple of speakers, a 12v psu, and build it all into a rugged tool case? Portable, tough, runs off mains or car battery, should do the job if you can find a radio with a decent menu for the mp3s. And fun to build.

I used to do things like this,everybody always laughed.
I am using now an mp3 player hooked up to the radio via a patch cable,this works OK but not without problems.
I have to turn the volume up on the mp3 player.
The mp3 player needs batteries.
It is small and hard to read the menu.
I just might look into your idea of building one.
Can't promise you it won't be ugly looking!
