well, those are bands - what i was looking for were individual tracks, kind of the
best of xxxx over the years. naturally, if there is a sampler or 'best of heavy metal'
CD available, that would be easiest, but some of you coming of with the 10-20 best

In my opinion, I would start with Led Zeppelin 1, often quoted as being the start of the heavy metal genre. I believe it started a bit sooner with the Yardbirds (Jimmy Page was a member), but what do I know. I did see the Yardbirds at the Santa Monica Civic in 1966 when Page was subbing for Jeff Beck when he was in hospital with tonsilitis.
You could do a cop out and give them LZ1 as a starter and work from there.
