At some time I intend on going up into the loft and re-ripping using 256vbr mp3 (although I have been planning on doing that for well over a year and probably never will). The bigger problem is that for a long time I used to download stuff off mp3sparks using MPEG-4, and there is no way I'm forking out the cash to redownload those. Anyway, I'm happy enough with my ipod so although a little irratated by the whole formatting thing, I can live with it,

Dave have you not thought of converting your MPEG4 files to mp3?
There are plenty of converters available that will do that and you will then end up with your library in a universal format.
