I have a cd in a hi-fi, but I rarely listen to it. No need for cd players anymore really. On the other hand, I have a couple of cassette players because a) I have some tapes I can't get cd/digital copies of and b) I'm too lazy to convert them to digital just yet.
Computers have taken over both home and portable music areas. Computers are needed to make music portable (e.g. to transfer to mp3 players) so it makes sense for the home music system to be built around the PC.
You can get laptops I think where you can play cds without having the computer fully switched on (a Toshiba media centre laptop had this feature I think).
So I think there will be a time when all PCs could potentially have huge speakers and subwoofers connected to them, as well as music control buttons/lcd screen on the front of the PC and a remote to use it from a distance. You'll be able to play cds and maybe access the designated hard drive music folder without the computer being switched on (I mean without using the full power of motherboard, graphics, memory, processor etc). Maybe there's a PC already out like that?
