Amy - classic poet? - 05-29-2008, 03:29 PM

I thought Vik might like this story - Students asked to compare the lyrics of Amy Winehouse to the poems of Sir Walter Raleigh

*sigh

All this fuss over nothing. They are not saying Winehouse is as great as Raleigh, Shakespeare and other greats. A comparison in an exam is just that - comparing the language they use, their style, what analysis you can make about the poems/lyrics, their authors and the times they live in etc...

Who knows, Amy Winehouse *may* be revered in 400 years in the way Shakespeare is today, but that's not the point. Both are popular writing figures of their day, and nothing's wrong with comparing them.

You could validly compare Homer with Eminem or any other modern writer, too.

I think so too. You can compare apples and oranges.

On the other hand, I think reading Harry Potter (with all due respect - I love it!) at school is a travesty! Maybe I am starting to show my age. Oy!

Now that's funny, Dave

The difference between Homer and Homer Simpson is almost nonexistent

Amy Winehouse a classic poet? Made me remember the old bit from the Steve Allen Show where he recites a popular song as poetry:
