CBGB - Is it still around? - 07-29-2008, 10:30 PM

Was talking with a client today, the subject somehow came up about CBGB (don't ask) and we didn't know if it was still around with music acts or not. If anyone in NYC area knows?

I was there in 92, saw some strange band that sounded like southern punk / thrash - the place had certainly seen it's better days.

CBGB's is closed down..maybe 10 years ago...they tried to save it as a NYC
landmark...no go.

I played there in 1974 with a band called
The Great Mistake ...played 2 nights with them and left..it truly was a great mistake...Lenny Bruce's daughter was the front women but she couldn't sing.....Took the money and ran..

CBGBs got closed down, but only a couple of years ago, no more. I avidly followed their unfortunate demise and was there not long before it closed.

Yes, I found on Wiki that it closed in Oct 06, Patti Smith played the last concert. There is a web site that sells T-shirts, paraphanelia, etc. and with the t-shirts at $25 a pop someone is making a boatload of bux on the name.

Also, great story Nightfly. 74 with Lenny Bruces daughter...was she any good at stand-up ?

She was good at drinking and cursing like her dad but inherited no talent...

sorry about the 10 year thing maybe I got it confused with
The Bottom Line story also a NY legendary place for music.
I try to use my memory rather than look things up....(another Great Mistake)

I've played CBGB twice! That said it was a shitehole, great memories or no.

I think some fellow is trying to turn the location into an upscale clothing boutique or somesuch.

I agree I didn't find the place so "special" but dug it the night
I saw and hung out with Patti Smith.I understood the magic that could happen in that club. The nites I played there I hated everything about it.
Even the stale Bud on tap...eccch

My cousin Joey was a roadie for the Ramones so I used to go and help
out on those nights they played there, they were really cool and fun
where am I nites...

My cousin was a roadie for the Rolling Stones in the early sixties before they had been discovered and just played in pubs/clubs in SW London.

He gave it up as he thought they were never going to get anywhere - he became an air steward for BOAC (forerunner of BA) - might have been a mistake

If you have one watch you know what the time is. But if you have two you don't know which one is right.

The more advice you get the more confusing it becomes.
