My guess is that many of the American stand up comedians of today don't cross over to the big screen. At least not as often as they used to do. Therefore they're not nearly as often getting to be household names here in the
best part of Europe too
The Americans:
Back in the 80's (again

)
Chevy Chase and
Steve Martin were the kings of comedy for me

Closely followed by
Eddie Murphy and
Bill Murray.
Andrew Dice Clay was unbelievably funny in "The Adventures Of Ford Fairlane."
And even if he never did any stand up comedy, I have always found
Michael J. Fox to be excruciatingly funny.
I like a lot of the stuff (not all, though) made by
Tim Allen,
Jim Carrey and
Will Ferrell.
Both
Billy Crystal and
Owen Wilson I started out finding not funny at all - but I have now grown to like them both very much.
The Brits:
Rowan Atkinson as Blackadder (
NOT "Mr. Bean," which is
UN-funny

),
John Cleese,
Mel Smith,
Griff Rhys Jones and
Rik Mayall.
Why were there no women in the above rant?
Well, I can't think of great many females making almost exclusively comedies. But for me
Kirstie Alley is legendary in "Cheers" (she must be the weeping champion of all time).
Bette Midler is funny too - but other than that...?
I'm sure there
must be more (world wide) well known female comedians, I just can't think of any
Suggestions? Anyone?
