I love Cheap Trick but they put on one of the worst shows I ever saw (in 1985 opening for REO Speedwagon who were the worst I've ever seen). That said I had a chance to hang out with Tom Petersson and Rick Nielsen many moons ago and they were stand up folks. I know they are capable of better than I saw them (they were great with a few songs Tom and Rick did with the Posies).

Was never a Journey fan though a couple of their songs are ok and I've recently picked up in a fit of nostalgia. Or dementia. One of those two.

To bad about Cheap Trick...Rick Nielson is one of the finest pop/rock
guitarists out there.

The nostalgia leads to the dementia.......lol......

Review - 07-10-2008, 07:28 PM

Here's my review of the Journey concert last night in Denver. (Nostalgia and dementia were both present in varying quantitities )

Cheap Trick opened, good set starting with the "hello there" and ending with the "goodnight now" ditties. The mix was a bit high, mostly Neilson guitar. He did come out with the guitar with 5 necks for "Surrender". Not bad, not great.

Heart was next, and they sounded good. Did most of the rocking hits ('Cuda, Magic Man, Crazy on You). Highlight was an encore of Zep's "Going to California" followed by a rousing version of "Love Reighn O'er Me" which was dynamite. They were really quite good.

Journey came last, they had a very good mix. The new guy replacing perry sounded good, seemed he had a bit of problem with nerves. (It was a 12K audience in an outdoor setting). The guy that really was hot in Journey was Neal Schon, he was ripping it up on his guitar. Someone told me he joined Santana when he was 15, for Santana III. That was after turning down Derek and the Dominos! They did mostly old hits, some new material also. "Wheel in the Sky" was the highlight. They had the entire audience singing "Don't Stop Believin" for the encore.

Great crowd, my premonitions were right so really quite an enjoyable show under the stars.

When I mentioned it was a fun crowd, I wanted to elaborate:

1) Many sightings of mullets, or I should say fake wig mullets by audience members.

2) Many females with t-shirts with "WWSPD" in large letters on the back. Further inquiry proved that it stood for "What Would Steve Perry Do"; however one patron said it stood for "Women With Steve Perry Disease". (For someone not even in attendance, this guy is getting folk hero status.)

3) One t-shirt that read "Ann Wilson - Broncos Middle Line Backer". Ouch. Where do people get these ideas....

Thanks for the review, Kaeli

Sounds like a good show!
Good to hear that Heart can still do it live.
I was a fan of their 70's and 80's material, they did some great stuff back then.
Saw them live back in '87 or '88, they rocked!!
And Ann Wilson does have a GREAT voice.

Also love Journey's best tracks - Don't Stop Believin', Who's Crying Now and Separate Ways are my favourites

a little late (of course!)...

neal played briefly with santana at woodstock in fact...
at age 17 he became an official member of santana and appeared on studio albums 'santana III' and 'caravanserai'.
he joined santana after being asked into both derek and the dominos (due to the death of duane allman) and santana, but chose santana over the band he really wanted - derek and the dominos. the choice was made due to eric clapton's extreme use of heroin at the time, something he chose to avoid.

among the many bands and solo works neal has put out since debuting in santana, for me, the one band that really excelled was a band called 'abraxas pool'. they made just a single album (CD), but it's a complete throwback to the sounds of santana's first thru third albums (again, for me, the best that band ever sounded).
abraxas pool is the (arguable) original 'santana' band with neal schon in place of carlos.
here's a link at millisong - Abraxas Pool Music Downloads Mp3
if you like the sound of early santana, i simply don't know how you couldn't love this album. and wait till you hear the 7 minute instrumental 'Szabo'...

I just picked it up also. Thanks, Pouche! I've been listening to Neil Schon for a few years now and hadn't realize he is rock n roll royalty.

Great album recommendation!

Tom
