Neil Schon's best work was with Soul Sirkus, pick up the album World Play. Should have kept playing with Jeff Scott Soto (also in Soul Sirkus). If you want an amazing disc, pick up Jeff Scott Soto's Prism, or Talisman - Talisman I. Both excellent discs.

also, the short lived Planet Us (Hagar, Schon and others was pretty good too)

Yes - Congratulations Whitete on being a Sr. member.

Also, does anyone know if Neal Schon is on the Santana Lotus Live Cd's. That is an excellent live Santana, and I believe recorded in Japan. The Se A Cabo and Samba Pa Ti are the best versions I've heard, also Neshabur. It's all good!

Lotus was originally a 3LP Live set from Japan only available outside the US as
a import. So anyone who is interested in Santana and hasn't heard of this
album ,there are many fine inspirational moments here.

I agree with Kaeli .... definitely recommended.

I will try and find out if Schon played on it.

no. neal and original vocalist/keyboard player greg rollie (vocal Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman, No One To Depend On, Taboo, etc.) had left to form Journey by the point of the Lotus recording.
the band for Lotus was the band that mostly comprised the first of the truely 'Jazz influenced' albums, 'Welcome' (though it could be argued that Caravanserai was the first of the 'Jazz').

the early santana CDs have been re-released, and include many live versions of songs. some few include neal schon.
neal did played alonside carlos on the 'santana - buddy miles Live!' recording. mostly crap...but perhaps worth listening for (and DL'ing) the tracks Marbles and Lava, then re-joining them as they were recorded and intended. some nice guitar.
Santana, Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles! Live!: MP3 Download

oh, one last note. if you've never listened to the song Toussant L'overture from santana III, do yourself the favor. if you like screaming, insane guitar that fits in the setting of a great song performed by great musicians (NOT joe satriani-style guitar masterbation!!!), this may be it. at about 3:40 of the song, carlos and neal playing off each other....omg. carlos starts off, into keyboard, then neal comes ripping out of the keyboard so brutally you nearly miss the first couple notes.
this song is also terrific at showing the, though similar, different styles employed by each guitarist.

He's not - he had already left to join "Journey"

In 1973, Santana, having obtained legal rights to the band's name, formed a new version of Santana, with Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas on percussion, Doug Rauch on bass, Michael Shrieve on drums, and Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards.

Santana was later able to recruit jazz vocalist Leon Thomas for a tour of Japan, which was recorded for the live, sprawling, high-energy fusion album Lotus.

CBS records would not allow its release unless the material was condensed.

Santana did not agree to those terms, and the album was available in the U.S. only as an expensive, imported, three-record set.

It's the "Welcome" band on Lotus with Alice Coltrane on second Keyboard
and percussion..looked on the LP

And I can't agree with you about Joe Satriani....a great teacher and player.
He is quite different than Santana and a comparison is not fair.

Satriani is a master of the type of blues "Tech" guitar player and I knew
him as an aquaintence many years ago when he was a guitar teacher in Long Island. He put out "Surfing With The Alien" and the rest is history. For those who don't know Joe Satriani start here and play it loud!

"Don't Dis Joe"

lol. kk. i understand your personal affection.

i'd never compare satriani and santana. for me there is no comparison.

as you know, i'm a prog fan. and if you know (any) prog fans, we care tremendously(!!) about the music! note: my two all-time favorite bands are YES and Renaissance. probably Magenta is my favorite these days. these bands are comprised of stellar musicans. while santana may not be 'prog', they do/did have excellent musicians with hugely constructed songs.

this is what appeals to my ear far more than a single musician backed by an okay rhythm section.
i'll take stevie ray vaughan with his excellent pianist and rhythm section any day...or kenny wayne shepherd, or hendrix, or clapton. all these musicians play(ed) 'fuller' rock/blues songs. not just a vehicle for guitar solos.
it's not a condemnation of satriani's guitar playing....it's (for me) a lack of multiple-listenings interest in the songs. much like a Nagel vs. a Rembrandt in the art world. it's dimension, it's depth, multiple viewing interest.

in truth, one of the greatest guitarist of all time was much the same as joe - and that was roy buchanan (sadly gone). but even his work was often simply a vehicle for guitar.......or how about john mclaughlin? another example.

so easy Night. it's not a slam against the guy...just not a preference in terms of music.
