Melbourne Cup - 11-05-2007, 09:52 PM

Oz is the only place I know of where a public holiday is given to celebrate a horse race. Today is the running of the Melbourne Cup and it is almost compulsory to bet on it and watch or listen to it live. Looking at the field I could not go past a horse called 'Mahler' . I just hope he is conducting his first symphony (theTitan) and not his sixth (the Tragic)
Here is a link if anyone wants to suggest a better bet - the race starts in about 6 hours.

Squash,

Here we have the Kentucky Derby which is a big deal.
I used to love the pony's many years ago and was
quite a good hanndicapper...I still am, only go a few
times a year now during the summer.

But thanks for this link..I have a few mates who will be interested
and probably have played this race at our Racing simulcasting..
By the way ..it is a beautiful racetrack ...seen it on simulcast
I have played it many times myself and you have many quality horses running there, making it easier to bet because they are truer to form.

Edit:Mahler looks good at 6-1 ....I notice he's in light that the weights(handicaps)go down as you go towards the out side posts...Mahler is in the 24th post if he is not a good closer or does not make a early move torwards the top they will be playing the 6th when he eventually comes in....

Also Jockey David Hayes is down for 5 mounts if he is put on a favorite
inside horse go with him..his other mounts will probably be scratched.

Play Mahler and the Hayes horse in a exacta box.

Good Luck!

Thanks Nightfly.
As mahler's second symphony is my favorite, I might make that an each-way bet.

Squash,

Have you ever heard of Mahler's second conducted by Kaplan..
The only Symphony that he conducts..and he does a
wonderful job at it...check it out on Amazon.
It also has the best notes, I've ever seen on any symphony.
Breaks it down passage by passage. Kaplan is a scholar
and shares his knowledge with the listener.

You've both convinced me. Just put my £4 down on Mahler to win at 8-1. Usually stick to football for my betting, but I'm game to lose some money on a horse race aswell ,
Cheers,
Dave C

OK Dave, but be warned, I don't have a great record. I thought New Zealand were a certainty to win the rugby world cup
I note Mahler is a UK horse
Good Luck,
Squash

I am not sure whether I have the Kaplan and I am not at home now to check - but I will tonight. My favorite is Solti with the Chicago Symphony.

PS Hayes is a trainer. I have decided to quinella Mahler and Tawqeet, a USA horse trained by him.
Regards,
Squash

You read my mind ..that was the inside horse I was thinking of...
You'll get a decent price on that because of Mahler.
So Hayes is not running all 5 horses is he ?

Next time there's a big race I'll get "The Form"...online for the day.

Anyways ..........Good Luck!

Mahler 3RD - 11-06-2007, 04:58 AM

200 metres out he was in front and looked a good thing but there were two others just a bit better. He didn't give up for a very creditable 3rd place and returned $3.60 for every $1 invested. Like I said, a good each-way bet
He's a young horse for such a long race and I will have an eye out for him next year, if he is a starter.

I watched the race live on our OTB station on cable...
which horse was it that made that really wide turn
and took his trip on the outside rail and almost closed
but ran out of room...who ever that jockey was gave
what seemed to be a decent horse a almost comical and bad ride?

Was a great race though...Mahler did go to the top as I thought
being in the 24th post (whew) but couldn't hold off the closers
and ran out of steam but if you see Mahler with a inside post
he's the one to beat...there will be no need for him to go to the
top he will take cover in the 4th postion and close in the straight way.
(I saw yesterdays "Racing Form" today) and yes he is a young horse
and was going against rising class.Efficent on paper was the one to beat.
