As a kid, I used to stock glass bottles of soda pop in the coin machine at my dad's auto repair garage. Fanta orange, grape, RC Cola, Coke or Pepsi of course.

This was in the U.S. mid-west (northern Illinois). We called it "soda pop", no kidding!

Fizzy drinks are known as pop over here, and soda isn't used as a word to describe them.
Just reminded me, my friends from north of Hadrian's call all fizzy stuff "ginger" regardless or maker or flavor.

I've never used the words pop or soda in my life to refer to that kind of drink. Usually I call them soft drinks, or by their name e.g. Coke, Pepsi, cream soda, ginger beer etc.

In the US we call it high fructose corn syrup. When will we ever learn corn isn't good for anything?

HFCS is a sweetener - not a drink itself; in Europe they still use sugar. HFCS is less expensive, and there is little taste difference that's discernible (or of note) to Americans.

Well, this American can taste a huge difference plus it makes a huge difference in my mood. Seems most Americans don't know about Fructose malabsorption and how it can lead to depression and other disorders. It is no wonder the pharmaceuticals are able to sell anti-depressants like candy wherever there are high fructose diets. Anti-depressants have no positive effect on me but reducing fructose from my diet does.

Anyway, when I think of pop/soda here in the US I think of HFCS and I think of depression - outside the US I think yummy, sugar buzz and even mood boost.

It is estimated that over 70% Caucasians suffer from Fructose malabsorption and don't even know it and the percentage of Non-Caucasians haven't even been studied. A diet high in Glucose may be bad but one high in Fructose is 100x worse.

I don't know whether it's the higher quality of product, but most of the sodas I drink that are sugar based taste much better than HFCS drinks.
