I most definately LOVE the music of Queen! No ifs, ands, or buts...my high school years would never have been as much fun without "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Tie Your mother Down"

Seeing the Dead live, with Garcia, doing a 30 minute version of "Fire on the Mountain / Scarlet Begonias" was majic kingdom stuff!

That's OK ...I'll just listen to the man who created modern Jazz and Fussion
by myself......

Listening to "Kind of Blue" right now and that Coltrane, man.
It doesn't get any better for me....

Thanks for the inspiration...

Where do I start? Well, I'll start with Queen. I won't repent - I hate 'em. Always have, from the days before they were famous and trying to muscle in on the glam rock scene. Brian's May's an ace guitarist, though.

Miles Davis - I wish I did understand his music because then I could be a cool dude who likes Miles Davis. But I've borrowed a few albums and I just couldn't hear the tunes. Maybe you could recommend some that would end my shame.

Elvis Presley - While I can appreciate a lot of his stuff - especially the early singles - I've never felt a need to own any of his music. My sister used to play Heartbreak Hotel when I was a little kid and it scared me - maybe it's a reaction to that! I saw a documentary about Elvis a while ago and it helped me understand his importance. He helped make black rhythms popular with white Americans, which I hadn't realised before.

Grateful Dead - Another band I wish I liked. I loved all that San Francisco scene - Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe etc but when I tried wading through the Grateful Dead back catalogue I couldn't find much I liked. Maybe I should have seen them live - that's what they were famous for, isn't it?

Springsteen - Well, my wife loves him but he's another one I knew of before he was famous. He was hyped like crazy, which put me off a bit. But really I'm just not over-keen on the music and the Man of the People stuff is a bit irritating.

I didn't realise I'd mentioned so many American heroes - there's no racial motive! Just think of the stuff I DO like.

And it would be a boring world if we were all alike.

Yes you got a reaction,Great post...

Miles Davis ...go with his early stuff to understand the progression
"Workin" by the MIles Davis Quintet

Evis Presley..His Sun Recordings great raw Rockabilly and 1956-1959 Rock and Roll records
I do not care for late Elvis myself.

Grateful Dead did not make a decent studio album that matched there abilities.Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are the country side
of the dead and they are pretty good albums.Check out "Mars Hotel"
and "3 from the Vault" a great Live set. You are right the Dead were
wonderful, on a good night live, their muscianship could not be touched.
But they were not consistent. That's why people followed them.To catch
them on a good night and catch the magic...Check out the album "Live Dead"

Springsteen is the real deal...I saw him in the early days in a small club,
and he played his heart out.Every town that Bruce plays he gives $10,000
to a charity in that down. That's something that's not written about, but I
know, because I knew a writer who saw this with his own eyes, and was asked not to print it, so people wouldn't hound him for donations.
Definitely has money, but understands the middle class blight.

Kaeli,

You understand......If you never heard Garcia there are no words to describe him on a good night.I first seen them in 1968 when they were
doing the jazz/rock/blues jams 30mins of "That's It for The Other One"
breaking into St.Stephen...I was never the same.

Well, I like Bruce a lot more for knowing that. Funnily enough, I went through a phase of liking Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, who I believe helped inspire Springsteen.

Yes, I've been there and lived it. Didn't ever get to see them live until '79 (Terrapin Station - Estimated Prophet @ Red Rocks ), then probably 7 or 8 times in the later 80's when they played Shoreline and toured quite a bit, after Brett Mydland passed on and they had Bruce Hornsby on keyboards. Jerry really seemed to be "with the program" then, very melodic on his jams.

Sirius radio has a station dedicated to the Dead, and I have heard some "from the vault" classics uncovered there. Also would recommend a website called Wolfgang's Vault, they have a ton of great concerts by many significant artists.
