Have you upgraded to iTunes 8 yet? If so, have you tried the Genius function? Others are down on it for the mind-sucking info it provides to Apple, but if you can get past that little problem it will give you back some very good playlists.

It does provide some clever playlists! I wish my iPod too supported it, but it's an older model unfortunately... I did add a few playlists I created in iTunes to my iPod manually.
