Question Albums or Songs? - 07-23-2007, 01:42 AM

I'm curious, when downloading music do you guys download full albums (knowing that there maybe only one or two songs on the album that you like) or just the songs that you've heard and like?.

I think it depends on your musical taste..I will purchase a album 90%
of the time because I listen To Jazz Blues World Classical Indie which are
album oriented..But some times I just gotta here a oldie then I cherry
pick my favorites from various bands and make my own compilations...
Usually in mainstream Rock I find myself liking a song or 2 and then I will
just take those songs..to put on my player..

An occasional single here and there, when it's some truly brilliant or addictive pop. An occasional album to try on.

However, normally, the music I listen to merits buying the entire album, as I try to be quite selective in my purchases.

I listen to "GOOD" music only!

That said.... I've acquired most of the recent UK pop chart top sellers (I am from US myself) - such as Razorlight, Kooks, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, James Morrison, Fratellis..... Because it's brilliant and addictive Brit pop... I am sure, someone's likely to say that I have no taste in music whatsoever

hello and good evening,

i always download the full album. it seems easier for me to manage my music this way. with the price for a full album i just go for it. if the album only has one good song, oh well the price was right.

thanks for the post,

chad

ditto. I tend to DL the enitre album if it's new, because I don't know how the songs may grow in me over time. But if it's an older album I know well and there are songs I am sure I don't care about, I only take what I want.

I have begun to whittle songs off of my iPod that I no longer listen to. If it is part of an album I see myself playing in it's entirety, I keep it on, If not, it's off.

Good topic Namroc.

Yep, despite how it came out above -- I primarily listen to classical, rock, and soul/R&B. You're right, odds are, most people here listen to a wide variety of music - far beyond what they normally would constrict themselves to. I know with my acquisition of an iPod 3 years ago and with access to a brilliant selection of well-priced music, my horizons have broadened so much!!! On any given day I find myself downloading GOOD music in all genres, even if that meats exposing myself to some artists' "Greatest Hits" album. All this music is generally very carefully selected/pre-filtered before being download.

EXCEPTION :

Just the other day I downloaded some French Rap (God bless Frunze's soul who recommended it). Gotta say, when I heard (read, rather) the words "french rap", they didn't immediately conjure up the thoughs of GOOD music. However, after she explained that that this music is great as a background noise meant to repel a bad boss/co-workers, while baring no effect on your productivity, I was sold. Whereas, I am not yet convinced on it being GOOD music - I can't wait to give it a whirl at work tomorrow

Entire Albums - 07-23-2007, 11:13 AM

Hi friends!

I always download entire albums, because I can change my likes about songs (maybe today a song doesn't like me, but maybe tomorrow it does). Absolutely, all kind of music. Each moment has its music. I'm very lucky because I can hear music during job, since I was a student, it helps me to concentrate on what I'm doing, so I spend a lot of hours each day listening to music.

My wife says me that I live in a permanent soundtrack

Kalvin

Thumbs up Whole album - 07-23-2007, 12:16 PM

For me it is almost always the whole album. I tend to just think (or at atleast hope) that the artist / production team have spent some time and effort into how the album will 'flow'. Quite often after a couple of listens, it is obvious it is just one or two good songs with a load of fillers. If this is the case I either rate the good songs for a playlist, or uncheck the fillers so they are not added to my i-pod. As someone else said, albums / songs do grow on you, and if you just pick the singles, you could miss out on some good stuff,
Cheers,
Dave C

NB. Big fan of the late great Kirsty MacColl and one of my favorite quotes from her is:-
Kirsty MacColl was responsible for sequencing the Joshua Tree album (superb production job). When asked how she did such a good job on the track order she replied; 'That's easy, my first favorite song, my second favorite song, my third favorite song......'

It's been a long time

It depends, if I know the album is good, or I know at least 3 or 4 good songs on it, I'll probably buy the entire album. If I only know one or two good songs, I'll probably only buy those two unless I've heard from other people or reviews that the album is really good. The nice thing about AllofMP3/MP3Sparks is that you can buy two songs now, and the rest of the album later if you change your mind, without having to re-buy the same songs

In iTunes, I have a 'main' playlist that only contains the 'good' songs, and this is the one I normally use. I also have a playlist "Full albums". Occasionally I will pick an album and listen to it in its entirety instead of only the best songs. Sometimes I discover a new song that I like, which I can then easily add to the 'good' playlist.
