Unhappy Depressing music which makes you happy - 07-25-2007, 09:49 PM

After reviewing by ipod list I notice half of my music edging towards the 'depressing' genre. This is fine though as I find this sort of music strangly uplifting and anything which can make me smile while sending a tingle down my spine has got to be a good thing. I find it difficult to pick just five songs falling into this category, but here goes:-

Nick Cave - Into my Arms & Brompton Oratory (+ loads of others)
Joni Mitchell - Little Green
The Reindeer Section - Budapest & Your Sweet Voice
Antony & the Johnsons - You are my Sister (+ loads of others)
Marillion - Blind Curve

Anyone else got any, or are you all happy people,
Cheers,
Dave C

ABBA is my "happy place music"

[EDIT] never mind. you were asking about depressing music. I misread the post.
I'd say Billy Holiday. She often makes me tear up, but her voice is like a warm blanket for my soul.

Hi Dave

I think that the depressing genre can be cathartic. I try to pick five songs also:

Eels - Last Stop: This Town
Eels - It's a Motherfucker
Eels - Railroad Man
Eels - Novocaine For The Soul
Marillion - This Is The 21st Century

Good night

Kalvin

I am definitely with you. I love depressing music.

A few favorites:

Live: Lightning Crashes
Brad Paisley: Whiskey Lullaby
Dave Matthews: Grave Digger
Foo Fighters: Everlong
Coldplay: Fix You
Alanis Moirsette: Uninvited
Mindy Smith: Come to Jesus
Metallica: The Unforgiven
Cradle of Filth: Nymphetamine Fix (this one's slightly outside of the list parameters)

Anything by Evanescence
Anything by Coheed and Cambria
Any OLD Linkin Park

Kind of a weird mix, I know. I am rather eclectic.

Just because you buy a new house doesn't mean your car should stop working. Right?

Hi Kalvin,
embarrassed to say that I have never heard of the Eels. Could you recommend one of their albums for me
Cheers,
Dave
