Hi lilkat,
Well, my backup policy is the following :
I backup everything valuable in at least 3 places
a/ one copy, "to be used / worked on, on your computer or external drive.
b/ one perfect backup copy (automatically updated twice a day, incremental)
c/ a third perfect backup copy stored in another safe location, miles away, on a NAS RAID 5 that's automatically updated once every 24 or 48 hours.
My music and other important files are also burned on DVD's once in a while.
This is why my advice is that
when you buy a drive (internal or external) you NEVER buy "only" the capacity you need !
ALWAYS buy double or even triple the drive space you need on distinct separate drives !
Pex : If you may need another 250 gigs, budget and buy AT LEAST two 250 gig drives.

The HD prices are now low enough to allow this to everyone. It's how everything should be backed-up.
