If the selection is limited to MP3, then I flat-out refuse to pay more than 10 to 20 cents per song.

Hi Petteyg,

Please define 'quality'. You are not suggesting that a CD has five time the audio quality of, say, a 320kbps MP3 are you?

Cheers,

Squash

What's a CD?

Hmmm. Think the last CD album I bought was 11 months ago. But I have just sent off for an indie artist's album

I still will buy CDs, although rarely, to have the liner notes and also sometimes to support the artist or just to have it (like a book). But I NEVER buy them in a store and NEVER pay full price. I get them used (half.com, djangos.com, amazon.com, ebay and also the trading platform lala.com). But like most of the music lovers on this forum, 90% of my music is downloaded online.
Same here. I still buy cds occasionally, but I never buy them full price. I'll buy them used on Amazon or some other web based store or go down to Dimple Records (a chain of used cd/dvd stores here in town) and buy them there.

Most of my music is downloaded online. Though I've also d/l stuff and really liked it and then bought the cd to have better quality. Springsteen's "The Rising", for example. D/l the entire cd for free at 128, loved it, and then went out and got the cd.

I still buy CD`s occasionally, if it`s an album I really like, or if I can`t find it available to download.
But these days, I always order them online, usually from Amazon or Play.
You can get some real bargains by buying used copies from their Marketplace or Used sections, and they are normally in very good condition.
I can`t remember the last time I bought an album in a physical store!

a stretch maybe but its a step..
That describes me exactly, living in an apartment a wall of CD's is quite overpowering, not to mention a second wall with a cupboard of vinyl. So I've made a decision to cut out jewel cases entering the house wherever possible. But I still need to buy a small quantity of CD's that are not available for download, like some local Australian artists or deleted or hard to get albums. I've just finished ripping all my CD's to MP3 (haven't started on the vinyl yet and will download those where possible) and my music collection lives on two external 500GB hard drives, with one a backup of the other (not full yet but I'm working on it). I also have a second backup in the form of 70 or so DVD's.

I go to gigs quite regularly, around 20 a year plus a few music festivals. Usually I'll try to get recent set lists, download any music I don't have and familiarise myself with all the songs that are likely to be played. The artist gets my money directly through the ticket price and any merchandise I might buy. The more familiar I am with the artist's work the more likely I am to go to their gigs.

Cheers,

Liner notes - 05-09-2008, 01:12 PM

I do still buy CDs. What I miss most when I download music is the liner notes. I enjoy reading all of the details about the artist, the recording, etc. It would be great if a similar download site could be found that offers downloads of the liner notes, too.
