I may not no Karate but I know Krazy - 11-14-2007, 02:23 PM

Since getting pin coded by the Pho master I went hog wild last night. I was downloading like a mohanchee. Several things have been added to the Alltunes catalog that weren't there when last I looked but that I've been on the hunt for for ages.

"Ramblin' Rover" from "Silly Wizard Live in America" by Silly Wizard
This album is out of print now and I never got a chance to get it on cd. It's not available on eMusic. My vinyl copy, which I've owned for 22 years (Yikes! I'm old) has been rode hard and put up wet. "Rover" is the one tune from this that is not on any other recording by them so it's rare case of taking just the track and not the whole album, though now that I'm thinking on it the live version of "Queen of Argyle" and the opening and closing reel sets are hot. Hmmm.

"Women and Children First" - Van Halen
The definitive statement from the best party metal band of all time. I used to own this on cassette! I have a live bootleg version (am I allowed to say that here?) from a Venezuelan concert of "Romeo's Delight" that breaches federal no fly zone rules. As Diamond Dave would say "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhhht!"

"Hallelujah" from "Grace" - Jeff Buckley
For some reason I was never really into him at the time but I heard this track on the radio this past year and it blew me away. The guitar work is very good and oft over looked because of the haunting vocal performance. This should go into the great covers category.

"Tammy Wynette's Greatest Hits" - Tammy Wynette
Saw George Jones live two years ago and it just doesn't seem right that I shouldn't have this in my collection. 60s country pop just floats my boat. Y'all. Funny thing is when I was in high school (in South Carolina) I hated this stuff. Time and distance certainly change things.

"Outdoor Type" from "Car Button Cloth" - the Lemonheads
The Lemonheads output can be patchy, but Evan Dando has one of the best voices in rock. It's the aural version of chocolate. I didn't much cotton to this record, I've lost it years ago, but I really love this clever little ditty. The song made an appearance in the understaed "Zero Effect" (the Paxton Stiller vehicle). One of the very few movies I'd love to see a sequal of.

"London Town" & "Back to the Egg" - Paul McCartney & Wings
Now you know how uncool I am. Still 70s era Wings is criminally underated. Before Sir Paul became a billionaire (and after his stint in that other band) he made some decent tunes. That period does end with "Back to the Egg".

Next up I'll definitely acquire "the Complete Stax Volt Singles Volume 1 1959-1968". I have Volume 2 which is atomic powered. Maybe some Amy Winehouse will be in order. "Blackwaterside" by Sandy Denny is on the must get list.

Amy Winehouse by doctor's orders !

(And as you might have figure out by now, I am prone to giving out completely uncalled for and not viable medical advice.)

I know she's everywhere, and everyone loves her - but she isn't even a tad overrated. I think she's wonderful (never mind her personal woes).

Hey Meridian,

Another great list and post.

Years ago when I heard "Hallelujah" it made my head spin..the whole
album was brilliant.

Tammy is "to country" for me,(I know she's a legend and all) though I like alt-counrty like Ryan Adams and Blue Rodeo
and Johhny Cash and all his Outlaws and Lyle Lovett and George Jones
is a great song writer "He Stopped Loving Her Today" still gives me chills.

Love the Power- Pop sound of The Lemon Heads and also like the lead
singer and their catchy songs..I'm a sucker for a good hook.

The McCartney albums have about 8 tunes that I could pull off of both
of those(Egg and London) but not my favorite Mac albums.

I have the complete Stax on CD it was a must have for me..the whole
thing is killer.

And I dig Sandy Denny.Beautiful voice...Can you make a recommened for me?
I have the first 2 FC albums.. How about her solo work ?

Thanks,

Nightfly

Here's the thing, I love Fairport and Sandy but it's a case of when the songs are great they're trancendant, when they're not great they're...uh...not great. In the classic cannon of FC (to me "Leige & Lief", "Unhalfbricking", and "What We Did on Our Holidays" I tend to prefer the songs that are closer to the folk tradition and less when they try their hand at American blues "Mr. Lacey" or just doing Dylan covers, though it could be argued that "Unhalfbricking" is a Dylan tribute record.

In any case I find the same with Denny, that the "folkier" stuff is better. "Blackwaterside" from "Northstar Grassmen & the Ravens" is my favorite. The only thing I can really recommend is go through piece by piece.

I have to agree that Denny's solo material are uneven affairs. I thought I was
missing something..I Also agree with your FC assessment that she shines on the more traditional folk pieces.

I had $33 credit with AT 48 hours ago, now I'm down to $3. What happened. I think my DSL has nearly melted.
