iPod Management Software - 08-20-2007, 06:43 PM

Hi,
Recently brought an iPod shuffle for a relative and loading some music on for her. I refuse to use the crap iTunes that plague all ipods.
Just wanted to know if anyone who owns an ipod has any tips or ideas on uploading music to their ipod using different software.

Im using mediamonkey at the moment which supports ipod synchronisation, but it struggles at converting my ogg songs to MP3.

I am trying winamp at the moment and get the same conversion problem, so i will try with a different mp3 encoder

This is probably not the answer you're expecting aom3, but unless your relative is computer savvy (given you are the one buying and loading her Shuffle I'm guessing no), I'd recommend you stick with iTunes. For a beginner it should work just fine, and with a small device like the Shuffle it should keep her out of trouble. It will also automatically keep her updated with the OS system.

As you'd guess, I actually like iTunes. All of my gripes and wishes don't seem to be handled any better by 3rd party software.

Aom3, Frunze is adamantly opposed to iTunes. Perhaps she can weigh on on what she uses instead.

Well, I hate iTunes. I really hate it. As a programmer, I hate it even more.... overbloated with features, memory hungry, slow, sometimes eats 100% of your CPU while you're doing something else...

IMHO a very good replacement is Anapod Explorer... I've been using it for almost one year without problems. Unfortunately it's not free, but if you try it I think you'll never want to switch back to iTunes!
I've never tested its OGG->MP3 conversion capabilities, but they have a free trial version if you want to test them for yourself. Oh, and it even lets you copy music FROM your iPod to your pc!

I hope you'll like it!

Thanks, but i'm standing by original choice of not going down the iTunes route.

I like iTunes much more now that I've got a Mac. What I like about it is all the useful AppleScripts that have been written to supplement itunes, which aren't available for Windows version. All sort of useful goodies for managing tracks, artwork, playlists, etc. I found most "I wish iTunes did that"-utilities here :-

Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes ♫ Welcome

Just downloaded a nifty "Mark bookmarable" script the other day, which allows me to convert large mp3s into Audio Books, so I can stop and resume later.

Just read about this freeware in a Digg article.

Ever wanted to use your iPod like a USB stick? Ever wanted to add and remove songs/videos easily and without needing to synchronize with your PC's music library? Ever Tried SharePod?!

That's a useful link. I will keep this as a bookmark for when I download stuff from sites other than mp3sparks,
Cheers,
Dave
