Thumbs up For the Kids - 02-19-2008, 04:12 PM

I have spent an age trying to find an album which I can listen to with the kids in the car and not find myself wanting to bang my head on the steering wheel. Finally I have found it; 'Colours Are Brighter' by Various Artists. This contains an excellent mix of indie / alternative bands (Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy, Ivor Cutler Trio, The Kooks, etc) who sing songs other than the standard 'Inch Worm' & 'Puff, The Magic Dragon (although Bonnie `prince` Billy does do a great rendition of this on Songs For The Young At Heart). The hugh advantage which this album has over all of the other is that my kids like them as well as me. So far my sons favourite is The Barcelona Pavilion with 'Tidy Up Tidy Up' & mine is Belle & Sebastian doing 'The Monkeys Are Breaking Out Of The Zoo'. You can get it from mp3sparks and emusic, and probably some others as well,
Cheers,
Dave C

Hey Dave,

I found myself LOL about the acceptable rendition of 'Puff' the magic dragon. When I listen to these old children's songs and nursery ryhmes, I become very disturbed of the true meaning of these songs, like 'rock a bye baby' or the little piggy's who went to the market and became bacon.

One of my nieces favorite albums is the 'sing-a-longs and lullabies' album by Jack Johnson. She also likes the barbie movie soundtracks or soundtracks to baby einstein (classical music for kids). The Curious George sountrack is good too.

I like the artists you mentioned, I will have to try that album out. Thanks.

~Zig
