Massive Attack - 07-29-2007, 04:27 PM

OK folks trying to figure out if anyone out there likes the early days of Massive Attack (two albums - Protection and Blue Lines). They drifted off into a muddled electronica after those, and the last couple of albums (Danny the dog etc.) were the hugest disappointment. The music is hip-hoppy, trip-hoppy, and otherwise very gorgeous, and although not from the US, the band took off here and some films used songs for soundtracks (Sliver, Hackers, recent show called House, etc.)

So what I am looking for is some bands similar to the early Massive Attack without being too contrived and pretentious, like Morcheeba, or way too electronic-like or trippy. Anybody got any recommendations?

If you haven't tried them already, try Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X and Portishead - Dummy.

Yeah, Dummy is cool - I discovered it back when the album just came out and a local station played the main song (nobody loves me). Like the other one, playing now - love the "pre-listening" feature on the *precious*

Thanks man!

Yeah... I am looking for something less electronica and more hip-hop with the similar sound effects as Massive Attack. The early years - especially Blue Lines - were spectacular, songs like Karmacoma especially. Moloko and Lamb I think are closer to the more current albums like 100th window and Danny the Dog - which is a huge deviation from the original course the band took. Collaboration with Tricky did wonders; now that he is elsewhere (also getting into more muddled electronica) the new Massive Attack is a pale comparison to the powerful stuff they did back in the day, I think.

Only in the first two albums, Blue Lines and Protection. He collaborated and even some of the songs on his Pre-Millenium Tension album are the same, only with different remixes and renditions. Cool, huh?

But afterwards - Massive Attack took a totally different turn and became a lot less unique. And now - a huge disappointment at least for me.

Girl,

I am getting a distinct impression that you guys are speaking Urdu after reading this thead.

However, that was the same feeling I had after you told me about French hip hop. Although at the time you might have been speaking French and not Urdu.

Girl, you just go and take a listen to ANY of the songs in Massive Attack's Blue Lines album, and you'll be speaking Urdu right there with us! The music is fabulous.
