I'm not surprised which one you voted for, and I agree

Barney,

Should have read your post 1st....

Because I really like the Robert Plant & Allison Krause album. It's a big hit
in our house.

But I'm still happy with my vote....

Well spotted - 08-17-2008, 01:52 PM

Well posted Barney

Unfortunately it took me 3 weeks to spot the post but my weak excuse being that I was away for two of them

I voted for Laura Marling as was recommended by a guy on the forum, Dave C, but I don't think he comes here any more (think he might have left after he was rumbled as a MAFIAA spy ) but it turned out to be an excellent recommendation never the less.

Like Vik I am amazed that Adele was nominated and that Duffy wasn't. I haven't got anything against Adele I just think Duffy's album is so much better.

If I wasn't voting for Laura Marling I would have gone for Rachel Unthank and The Winterset - I never thought I would be attracted to an album sung, in part, in Geordie dialect but it is a very magical album - if there's anyone who likes folky stuff and hasn't listened to it then I strongly recommend checking it out.

My third choice would be Robert Plant & Alison Kraus, a great collaboration and one that made me rethink some of my perceptions of 'Country'.

I've also enjoyed the others but in no way would I describe them as being 'stand out' albums but then again maybe my musical tastes are changing.

Burial - Untrue is an interesting one and given the right mood is a worthwhile listen. It's hardly uplifting but that's me clearly missing the point. It's clear strength is that it performed by an artist who is defining their own musical direction so that, alone, should be applauded. I hear it's the album hottest tipped to win so time will tell.

Took me 2 days (instead of 3 weeks) to see your post. Can't figure out why Duffy was not nominated. Could it be that her album came out in 2008 and these are 2007 releases? I am too groggy and sleepy on this fine monday morning to check. Adele's ok, but Duffy is a complete class act.

By the way, I haven't even stopped to think for a second about what happened to Dave C Where is he?

P.S. You can guess whom I voted for

The year of release is not the reason for Duffy's non-inclusion, Vik.
The Mercury Music Prize nominations cover releases from the previous 12 months, so it would cover 2007 & 2008.
Like you, I'm completely mystified as to why Duffy wasn't nominated, her album is undoubtedly one of the best of recent times.

I am thoroughly amazed that everyone here voted for Laura Marling. Just an unoriginal clone of Joni Mitchell. I do have a couple of tracks from her on my ipod, but in today's music I prefer the Amys, Duffys and Adeles of the world above Laura Marlings. Apologies to all who voted for her - I suppose I just have a bad taste. I prefer soulful to folksy any day

I voted for Laura Marling as it was my favourite out of those nominated.
If Duffy had been in the list, her album would definitely have got my vote, no question about it.
