Smile Old Friend Back On NY FM Radio and NET - 08-28-2007, 01:08 AM

My favorite Oldies station WCBS 101 NY is back on the air
after a 2 year absence..This station was around since I was
a kid ,and the plug was pulled a few years ago for some junkie
station ,that wanted to be be something to everybody but ended
being nothing to nobody.
This station is back playing music from the 60's,70's,80's
in a great old fashion informative format. With original DJ's
from the 60's..It plays everything and Doo Wop on Sat.
nights ,that makes this old Bronx boy very happy.
On the Net it has a new player interface with song title and album
title..I just heard-- Dylan, The Kinks, Dianna Ross,The Beach Boys
Genesis,The Ventures,Marvin Gaye,Beatles
To listen:
CBS-FM - New York's Greatest Hits - Homepage

What's your favorite station ?

Great station, superb music, had a listen this morning in the UK and takes me back to my Teens in the 60's. For somebody in the UK like me, the news, weather, and traffic problem bulletins are very quirky.

Thumbs up Return of the True Believers - 09-03-2007, 10:43 PM

thanks, nightfly, i wasn't brought up around nyc, but the format and musical sensibilities do take me back. i'm about two hours downwind of you weatherwise, and the traffic only affects me when i'm down your way, but knowledgeable djs spinning the music that made my acne flare is a strong pull. chris, is there an english station analogous to this one, with local weather and traffic for me to be confused by? the chubby checker interview is sweet. he was always an ambassador for rock'n roll.

Back in the days when I was a teenager and used to listen to the radio, I'd flip right past CBCFM to Z-100. Now that I've developed a much more refined taste I'll just turn the radio right off. Either way, I don't think I'm old enough for CBSFM Rama dama ding dong will have to wait a few more years.

or "what's going on" or "aint that peculiar" by Marvin Gaye...

Hi heliospower

You asked about English radio stations. There are many local and national stations and most of them are uniformly awful. But there are a couple of oddities worthy of note, and by coincidence they both started in 1964, long before commercial radio was an everyday reality here.

One is Radio Caroline http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk . This began as a "pirate" music station broadcasting from a ship off the English coast, and after a chequered history of fighting the Government and the elements they still broadcast today on the Sky satellite, staffed by volunteers, playing mainly classic rock and oldies. They played a major role in breaking the Government stranglehold on UK radio, and brought popular music to the masses in the face of official opposition, just as our Russian friends do.

The other is Manx Radio http://www.manxradio.com . It was able to broadcast because the Isle of Man, off the north-west coast of England, has internal self-government; it's a Crown Dependency and not part of the United Kingdom. Once notable for news stories such as "Mrs Jones's budgerigar is missing", it's kept a lot of its quaint local charm. This may be more like what you're looking for.

Both these stations have streaming feeds on their web sites. There's a complete list of all the UK local stations at http://www.radio-now.co.uk . I hope you find something interesting.

Thanks GM ...sounds great.

A very British perspective of oldies... sounds fresh to me.

Edit:Just a note listening to Manxradio they just played 3 songs about NY
In a NY minute --A UK song a guy missing his girl in NY..NY State of Mind
did someone tell them i was listening... ..and loved the news..
and now they are playing British Opera ..oh my..some thing about a Fox Hunt. they sure are diverse..
