I've auditioned a few other Afro / Latin bands but haven't found anything to come close the the drum rhythm and the guitar playing of Mr. Santana.
Has anyone got any good suggestions of what I can try that comes close to what Santana can offer?

Hirs,
As a Santana fan since 1969.. There is nothing out there that compares
to Carlos Santana and his band...I am a big fan of blues/rock guitar and
I love Latin... Afro-Latin and I have never heard it combined like
Sanatana...of course there are excellent Latin Rock bands like Los Lobos
and Los Lonely Boy but they are more Tex/Mex ... I suggest that you listen
to some real Afro-Latin music to get that same excitement with percussion
and horns (but sorry no Carlos) and just some cool Latin lead by percussionists..If you are interested let me know and I'll give you some recommends under the International/Country Forum ..we'll start a
thread called Afro-Latin..
But a cool recommend for Santana is a live album called "Lotus" it was
once a 3 record set ,that was hard to find..I saw it on one of the sites.. There is some really great Latin/Jazz fusion going on,on this recording, and Carlos is at his peak.
Edit:"Lotus" is on
Soundsbox at $2.46 (great buy..I paid 1979- $32 on vinyl Japanese import only at the time)
and" Moonflower"the expanded edition is on Sparks ..great album
