56 is much too young. I have got to say that I have never heard of Dan Fogelberg, which surprises me as listening to the short montarge which usatoday has on its site makes me think that he plays the kind of music I like. Of the five albums which mp3sparks has of his, which one would you recommend as a starting point, or is there another one of his which you would suggest above these??
Cheers,
Dave C

Dan Fogelberg ~ News

I am quite saddened to hear of his death ..

I was a fan of his early LPs and used to see him live.
He would start with a acoustic set and then come out
with his electric band..
Everybody thought of him as a folkie but he could
really play a really good aggressive electric guitar,
which was what I went to seem him for(and those great songs).

He was a great songwriter and artist and will be missed
by many.

You can prevent it from happening to you - 12-17-2007, 11:14 PM

It's sad when someone so young dies of something so completely preventable, so for any men close to 45-50, I say don't let this happen to you. I hate to date myself, but even though I was a little young for it, I have been getting my prostate tested for the past few years. There's even a blood test now, so there is no good reason to avoid it.

I quote from Dan himself shortly before he died (from his website http://danfogelberg.com/news.html):

A personal letter from D.F.
To each and every man....

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get a DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) and a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test EVERY YEAR.

The medical community suggests this for men over 50, but men with a family history of prostate cancer should start getting tested at age 40.

The PSA test is a simple blood test...it only takes a minute or two. The DRE, okay, every man squirms at the thought of this exam, but hey, it too takes only a minute or two, and IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Prostate cancer can be very slow growing or very aggressive, but detected early while it is still confined to the prostate gland, it can usually be treated and cured successfully.

Once it spreads beyond the prostate it is called Advanced Prostate Cancer (PCa). At this point it becomes imminently more life threatening and harder to treat. Do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and GET CHECKED REGULARLY. I promise you, you DON’T want to go through what I’m going through if you can avoid it.

Education and awareness are key, I urge you to follow the link below to the Prostate Cancer Foundation web site and read up on how best to protect yourself and reduce your likelihood of contracting this terrible disease.
Prostate Cancer, Prostate Cancer Symptoms, Prostrate Cancer - Prostate Cancer Foundation

I think a few seconds of a finger is a lot better than the three years of torture he went through. Don't you think?

Hi veganfred,
I couldn't agree more with everything you have said in your post. I have worked in the diagnostics industry for many years now and have worked on the development of several generations of the PSA and CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) tests, as well as several other lesser known cancer marker tests. If caught early, there is a lot that can be done about these diseases so it is certainly some thing that should not keep being put-off until 'next year',
Cheers,
Dave C
NB. I am listening to Home Free as we speak; mp3fiesta has got a good selection of his stuff

I hope that no one else on these boards is old enough to have to think of getting tested, but if you are, bite the bullet (possibly literally in the case of the digital exam ) and make your New Years resolution appointment today or tomorrow. Remember, the life you save WILL be your own.

I downloaded "Souvenirs" by Dan Fogelberg tonight... It was my first album that I heard by him ..It's been over 30 years and this album
still holds up really well.

Thanks for the music Dan!! - 12-19-2007, 05:58 PM

I too was saddened to hear Dan Fogelberg passed away. In fact, it was weird because I was listening to my ipod Sunday and "Hard To Say" by Dan was playing when I checked my yahoo email. I looked over the yahoo news and saw that he died. So, of course, as a tribute I had to play the rest of my Dan Fogelberg song collection. What a great singer/songwriter. Rest in peace, Dan! You will be missed.
I'm 42 years old with no family history of prostate cancer, but I'll listen to his advice and get checked out when the time comes!

Sad that he passed so young.

I remember one movie theatre in my old home town used to play "the Power of Gold" on their looped tape before films. It's still stuck in my head.
