Tip for 2008 - 01-01-2008, 01:55 AM

I saw this young lady a couple of months ago and was impressed and then tonight with Jools Holland on his Hootsananny New Years Eve Show. Amazing girl, apparently grew up with a natural musical inclination but virtually no musical influence - no record or CD player in the house. Considered by some to be the next Dusty Springfield, maybe even Amy Winehouse just (hopefully) less messed up (and, no, that wasn't a critisism of the situation Amy has found herself in ).

Her name's Duffy. I don't know if you'll be able to access this BBC link BBC - Radio 2 - Music Club - Duffy . Apparently her first album is out in February - I'll certainly be waiting for it

Next Dusty Winehouse? I'll keep an eye out. Sounds good!

Two more ladies worth noting:

The first for your delectation, ladies and gentlemen, is Kat Flint and her album "Dirty Birds". Despite what I'm going to write I hate 'categorising' music but she's a bit of a mixture of Laura Marling, Feist and A Fine Frenzy - Somewhat folky and essentially 'singer songwriter' but, on some tracks, a little bit of orchestration to give an extra dimension.

The second lady is Dawn Kinnard who is described as being a weird yet wonderful Pennsylvanian (whatever that means ) and her album "The Courtesy Fall" is out (in the UK at least) on 7th April. You can check her out on dawnkinnard.com - You can also find her on MySpace, YouTube & LastFM (I won't post links 'cos GM, quite rightly, will tell me off ). She's got a very sexy, sultry, seductive voice (much how I imagine Vikulenka to sound ). The Courtesy Fall was produced by Martin Terefe (Martha Wainwright/KT Tunstall/James Morrison) and there's also some music collaboration with Cerys Matthews.

If I'm late to the party and everyone already knows about these ladies then I'm sorry but it's the thought that counts

Is that because she got a bad cold at the moment, or do you imagine she normally sounds like that

Will give the two ladies a try; starting with Kat Flint (sounds very much like my sort of thing),
Cheers,
Dave C

Hey Rolly, I figured that bit I just wondered why 'weird' and 'Pennsylvanian' appeared to be linked

No I don't think Dawn Kinnard has a bad cold, I think she always sounds like that

Well, you've got me stumped. Just got her two track single (Go Faster Stripes) off emusic, but I can't find the album anywhere (including amazon & itunes). Single sounds great, so can you let us know where the album can be found,
Cheers,
Dave C

Thumbs up Hoax Funeral - 04-06-2008, 10:07 PM

Another excellent indie-folk lady singer to add to this list is Anjy Hall and her band Hoax Funeral. Their new album is available on emusic, but they have got tons of full track previews on last.fm if you want to check out first (Hoax Funeral – Listen free at Last.fm),
Cheers,
Dave C
