Question What was Your First Concert ? - 10-17-2008, 09:33 PM

Please list your first concert and the year, and the one that had the most impact on you musically.The one that shaped your musical sphere.

My first concert was The 4 Tops with the Motown Band in 1965 at
the Steel Pier,New Jersey.Lead me right to soul and funk at a young
age.

Also a early concert for me was The Searchers in 1966 at Palisades Amusement Park NJ. I loved them when I was a kid and still do.

The concert that shaped me musically was The Jefferson Airplane
at the Filmore East-1967.I changed from a "rock and roll" guitarist
to a rock improvisation guitarist.Jorma Kaukonen was a tremendous
influence on me as guitarist as well as bassist Jack Cassady.I had
never heard anything like that in my young life,and it rocked me to my core.

Edit: Dave also requested:Which concert do you wish, you could go
back in time and see again ?

Sorry I was late there, Nightfly. I have a good excuse - I was watching The Story of the Guitar on DVD, followed by Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight.

Anyway, my first proper band was Emerson, Lake and Palmer and they were stunning - Keith Emerson attacked his Hammond with knives, there was a fantastic light show and they played brilliantly. Don't listen to them much now, though.

Speaking of the Four Tops, I hear Levi Stubbs died today.

No problem Gaucho,I took it upon myself,but it was your great idea...

Mr.Stubbs tha fabulous lead singer for the original 4 Tops has been sick
for quite awhile.That is sad news and may he rest in peace.

First concert was Thin Lizzy and it would have been ~1980 (give or take a year). Really glad that I got to see Philip Lynott before he shuffled off this mortal coil.

Concert which I remember as being an absolute classic was Marillion on the 'Misplaced Childhood' tour in 1985. Fish was singing with such emotion that the album has remained a favourite of mine ever since.

Concert which was the most fun was definitely Dave Lee Roth on his Skyscraper tour of 1989. Went with a broken leg so got moved to the best seats in the house. What a party animal that man is

And to add an extra one to Nightfly's thread, which concert do you wish you could go back in time and see.
For me this would be Genesis on their Foxtrot tour. I would give anything to see Peter Gabriel in full costume blasting out Suppers Ready

It's been a long time

Mersey Beat. - 10-17-2008, 10:06 PM

The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Freddy and the Dreamers and others.

Hammersmith Odeon 1964 - start of the pop scene.

I can't really say I heard much over the girls (including my sister) screaming.

I was only 13 at the time but I think this sparked off my interest in music.

First concert was around 1972; "Peter Green-era" Fleetwood Mac at the Brooklyn Academy of Music...in Brooklyn, NY . I was pretty young and not really up on the Blues scene at the time, so I wish I could go back in time to see it again.

Other notables...(don't hold me to the dates)

Moody Blues at Madison Sq Garden, circa 1973
Allman Bro's, The Band & The Dead at Watkins Glen;
Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for Joe Walsh in Mobile AL, circa 1974
Gang of Four at NYC's Roseland Ballroom, circa 1981-ish;
The Clash at NYC's Bonds International Casino (opening night) 1981;
Pink Floyd The Wall at Nassau Coliseum;
U2 War tour at the Orpheum, Boston;
Peter Gabriel at the Palladium, Worcester, MA

That's all for now...brain hurts...

First concerts - 10-17-2008, 10:27 PM

Great idea'r for a thread. Here's mine...

My mother took me with her to see Elvis Presley in June 77. That was my first concert. He died 2 months later, but i don't think I ever saw fans (esp. the women) freaking out so much over a performer. It was bedlam.

After that initiation, I saw Styx (grand illusion) and then the Doobie Bros. with Simmons, Skunk Baxter, mcDonald, Porter, Knudsen. Both shows convinced me that any money I could save would go towards future concerts, and being right in front of the stage if possible

Fortunately for my ears, the novelty of being in front of the stage wore off after a couple of years.

Unfortunately I no longer have the ticket or program - I probably did not realise at the time how important they would turn out to be.

I nearly saw the Stones in the early sixties as my cousin was a roadie for them before they were famous, he left to become an airline steward as he though they were going nowhere - how wrong can you be!
