Yahoo Radio:Launch Cast -
09-12-2008, 12:08 AM
A good intuitive internet radio station is a Yahoo Radio Station called Launchcast.
You start your own station and pick the genres you would like to hear by grading
them. Then when you start the interface to your station, you will get a
4 star rating option for song, artist and album. The station will then
take all your accumulated grades and create a station that is suited
to your musical taste. The more time spent inputing, the more intuitive
the station becomes.
My station seems to have me down pretty well and knows my genres
and favorite artists.
You can skip songs you don't like and rate "never play again"
for songs you hate. The only problem is every so often there is a
29 sec. commercial. They offer a premium package without commercials,
but in my opinion it is not worth it.
They have been around for a long time, and really have worked out a nice
interface.I personally have used them for 5 years.Just returned today after
a 6 month absence from use,but it didn't forget me.The station played
Coltrane,Monk,BB King,Creedence,Miles,Aretha,Ramones,Bach extc.I didn't have to skip a song.
If you liked to give it a try its called LaunchCast:
LAUNCHcast Home
They also have stations to listen to in every genre and sub genre
that are very well programmed.
Enjoy,
Nightfly

Nightfly;
Thanks for reminding me about Launchcast. I used them quite often in the past, and like you, built up a pretty good profile of artists and albums to listen to.
I have not used recently, especially after getting involved with downloading music from the net.
I will check them out again!
Thanks - Mark

i have the feeling YAHOO has left shoutcast radio behind, long behind.
trying it with firefox, i get nothing at all, even the pop-up player will not show
(popups are NOT blocked).
trying opera, i get the following error mssg:
>> Yahoo! LAUNCHcast is currently compatible
>> only with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher for Windows.
>> Currently, we do not support LAUNCHcast Radio for Macintosh or Firefox
>> on Windows. If you are experiencing difficulties utilizing our
>> service with any other browser application, we recommend
>> trying the above versions to correct the issue.
on it goes: trying GOOGLE CHROME. and comes a similar error mssg:
>> SAFARI is unfortunately not supported yet. We recommend to ...
SAFARI? who used SAFARI? interpreting CHROME as SAFARI? long shot.
well, back to IE6.0. remove all popup blockers, and even free those 4 requested
domains in the popup listing, and then at least the PLAY YOU STATION window
starts, with 'TUNING'.
and thats where it sits. TUNING it is, no more. several tries.
is YAHOO really up-to-date with their shoutcast service. do they still support it?
dont know how you did it. any tips?
greets - henry
PS: had i read somewhere, long ago, that shoutcast was only available to US users?
IP addrss checked etc? could that be it?

Well, I didn't have to try every browser, because I spotted immediately that :-
"Browser Requirements
Yahoo! LAUNCHcast is currently compatible only with Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher for Windows."
It DID launch and play in IE with popups disabled instantly. I AM in the US.
That aside, I see no need to use this service at all. I am quite happy with Last.FM which is much more than an internet radio. My main use for it is to get accurate real-time information about my iPod listening habits.
Besides, I'd rather use Firefox pimped out with all the best extensions.
P.S. I DO use Safari on my MacBook..... sometimes. Usually use Camino. Yearn longingly for the day that Firefox will work properly on the Mac.

i try anything in firefox first, as this is the default. and certainly pimped to the
brim, too. and hundreds of things that say 'ONLY IE COMPATIBLE' will still run on
firefox, so just trying is well worth it.
LAST.FM is also geo-cached, so it will not work in many european countries at all.
sometimes the music, sometimes the videos, sometimes both. like so many things,
and more every day.
you will find out soon. you are lucky though, not the UK. so far.

That message on yahoo that I didn't fully paste that it won't run on Firefox
Last.FM is a UK based service, isn't it? If anything I expect it to be targeted towards the European audiences?

was. originally german, later merged with audioscrobbler, moved to the UK. even
if still 'based' there these days, then bought by CBS/usa last year. and started out
working everywhere, only recently getting selective.
** ... individual tracks on demand ... download tracks if authorised ...
both these items were the first to go for non-US. or non-W-EUR.
there was a time when i thought WWW stood for WorldWideWeb. and now have
a look where one could watch the olympics, even if only short clips. or where
things like ZATOO still work. miserable.

I use IE out of habit sometimes, but FF is far superior and use it for critical stuff like downloading and projects.
I use the FF Add on IEtab and Lauchcast works perfectly with firefox.
I have been using Last.FM as well and find it to be fine service
though I am not a Ipod person and don't get the full benefit,
I have found many bands and artists with Last.fm.
I still contend that if you are able to use Launchcast(not shoutcast ..thats another radio service..... ) that you will find it very intuitive and a great
alternative to add to your listening arsenal.

Oh right... The IE tab. I forget about that one all the time, though I have it installed. Thank you, Sir.
I don't think I need any more additions to my listening arsenal. It is thoroughly overwhelmed and unmanageable as it is
