While I am waiting for my boxset I have just downloaded Ian Hunter and "Strings Attached" from mp3sale, thoroughly recommended and cheap as chips.

The 4 x CD boxset arrived today and I am listening as we speak, well worth the wait, a must for any fan, the "Live" performances of Mott The Hoople are the best, and here you have FOUR different ones in one set!

True, they have been released before singularly many moons ago, now they are together as they should be and within a great 48 page book as well. As I personally did not have any of these four albums, then for me this was a must buy.

My second band I am really into at the moment is Procol Harum, they have also been given the once over at mp3sale as well.

forgot who it was, but werent there some HeavyMetal fans out here? i myself
do listen to it (did listen ...), but so infrequent that i am out of touch. now i am
asked to find an intro CD into heavy metal, some kind of sampler of the best,
with max one title each of every band, and ranging from the beginning till now.

anybody knows if such a thing is available? ready made? or do i have to sit
down and construct one of my own? in that case, could somebody suggest the
12-15 best titles to use? but pls, now war, just suggestions.

I have also been checking out the procal harum catalog that mp3sale recently added. And I like it, esp. the release called procol's ninth.

They also added an extensive group of Deep Purple. Henry66, if you get a chance - try "Come taste the band", "Burn", and "Stormbringer" which were 3 albums by Deep Purple released in succession in the mid 70's. They are all solid bluesy hard rock, with Tommy Bolin/Hughes on CTTB and Blackmore/Hughes (love Glenn Hughes) on Burn and Stormbringer. David Coverdale covers vocals on all three, with Jon Lord and Ian Paice on keyboards and drums.

Nightfly and Kaeli, good choice with Procol Harum, 40 years on and it still sounds great, same as Mott The Hoople for me.

well, those are bands - what i was looking for were individual tracks, kind of the
best of xxxx over the years. naturally, if there is a sampler or 'best of heavy metal'
CD available, that would be easiest, but some of you coming of with the 10-20 best
individual titles would also let me make one of my own.

the whole thing is supposed to be a birthday present (15sep).

In my opinion, I would start with Led Zeppelin 1, often quoted as being the start of the heavy metal genre. I believe it started a bit sooner with the Yardbirds (Jimmy Page was a member), but what do I know. I did see the Yardbirds at the Santa Monica Civic in 1966 when Page was subbing for Jeff Beck when he was in hospital with tonsilitis.
You could do a cop out and give them LZ1 as a starter and work from there.
