BAND OF HEATHENS and LITTLE FEAT - 07-21-2008, 10:32 AM

I recently spotted Band of Heathens browsing Alltunes and, suspecting Metal from the name, almost passed it by without tasting. Glad I did preview it as they are more Texas electric blues, folk/country rock and reminded me of groups such as The Band, the late Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas) and Little Feat. This is their first, self titled, studio album and well worth a listen.

I mentioned Little Feat, one of the great enduring bands from the 70's, who are releasing a new album next month called "Join The Band". The name reflects the fact that it has been made with a stellar line-up of guests doing classic Feat songs. It is already available on-line (I got mine at Alltunes) and is currently at the top of my list of 'best releases this year'.

The guest list includes Jimmy Buffett, Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, Chris Robinson, Bob Seger, Vince Gill, Bela Fleck, Brooks and Dunn, Sonny Landreth, Mike Gordon (Phish), Jim Mayer and Inara George.

Four tracks are absolute standouts:

Willin' - featuring Brooks and Dunn
Spanish Moon - featuring Vince Gill
Sailin' Shoes - featuring Emmylou Harris
And my favorite, Trouble - with Inara George (Amy Winehouse, eat your heart out)

Brilliant album, 5 stars

Enough said. Time to take the Labrador for a walk.

I may be some time.

Squash,

Thanks for the recommend. The newer Little Feat albums have been spotty. It sounds like having these guests, has rejuvenated them. They have been around for quite awhile, and have seen them many times.Great musicians.

I will also check out Band of Heathens, sounds like my kind of band....
