Question Best Album Releases of 2007 - 09-24-2007, 09:25 PM

As the year is getting on (definitely feels like autumn now), I think it's time we got started on a list of the top 10 album of 2007. I like this sorts of thing as it gives me a chance to try other peoples favorite albums which I might have missed. No more than of 10 albums (but if you only think 2 make the cut, just 2) and only 2007 release dates. Guess I get to go first; I tried to do this in order, but that gets a bit blurry after number 4:-

1) Of Stars & Other Somebodies - The Silent League
2) Marry Me - St Vincent
3) Take Time To Wonder In A Whirling World - Soft Hearted Scientists
4) Dressed Up For The Letdown - Richard Swift
5) Good Arrows - Tunng
6) The Stage Names - Okkervil River
7) Kismet - Jesca Hoop
8) Life In Cartoon Motion - Mika
9) The Bird Of Music - Au Revoir Simone
10) Poverina - Astrid Swan

Loads of good stuff missed the cut, but I think it has been a good year for music,
Cheers,
Dave C

I am not sure I want to comment on this one or present my own list, because I am still at a place where my musical taste is still expendable as a sponge because I got a fairly late exposure to "good" music (outside of Classical, on which I was raised). I'm open to a lot of stuff, but a large proportion of the music that is new to me is not new at all. So, Best of 2007 has a different definition for me than it does for you.

That said, I'd say the most quality record this year was made by (ta da! drum roll please!) Prince. And no, I am not a lifetime Prince fan. I've only been exposed to primarily his Greates Hits. Oh yeah - that and Joss Stone. Love the new record.

I'm still very much in 2006, as far as my "new music" goes, which was a year brimming at the seams with great stuff. Kooks, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Fratellis, Fallout Boy (or is that 2007?), Lily Allen, John Mayer.

"Newest" thing I've got is Ravi Shankar from 1967 and a live George Harrison disk

Really impressive Independent list...thanks to you I have been exposed
to most of the artists on your list...Thank you...
I was just listening to Okkervil River the other night..that I downloaded on your recommend and just got around to it..I liked it a great deal, great pop sensibilities with a edge...
One album I would also have on my top 10 list is "Beauty and Crime" by Susan Vega ..liked that one from the get go.

I'd go along with the albums by St Vincent and Jesca Hoop. Richard Swift's was good, too, but not a patch on his previous mini-album The Novelist for my money. But my biggest recommendation is for the new album by Louis Philippe - An Unknown Spring - especially for anyone who loves the High Llamas and late Beach Boys. You can download it from eMusic or buy it direct from Welcome to Sunshine - The Louis Philippe Web Site and there are rave reviews at Pitchfork and Allmusic.com Otherwise my discovery of the year is an Australia-based Canadian singer called Brian Campeau, who released an album called Two Faces last year that blew my socks clean off. I came across it purely by accident and couldn't believe how someone so incredible could have such a non-existent profile. Imagine if Jeff Buckley could have done harmonies and was also prepared to experiment with electronics and sampling - it's that good. Yet even in Australia his records are hard to find. Please have a look at his MySpace page and listen to a song called Montreal, then let me know if I've overhyped him.

Hi radioshoes,
Excellent post. I had completely forgotten about Jesca Hoop, I have just rectified that and downloaded her album which is now on mp3sales. Did not even know that Richard Swift had done another album; musicmp3.ru had that one so it is being downloaded as we speak. It took me a while to find the Brian Campeau single; Montreal (http://sandwichclub.fm/Music/Hutcho/300407/Montreal.mp3), sounds good, I shall have to track down the album,
Cheers,
Dave C
