Personally most of the music of that style does nothing for me.

I have never really been into this and the dance/techno music.
It might be me but it all sounds the same to me.
The youngsters would probably say the same about the music I listen to, so I will leave theirs to them and stick to mine.

It's not about youth - it's about good taste. Most rap just isn't music, as far as I'm concerned. There are exceptions, of course, but they're few and far between.

Taste seem to be very subjective, mine seems to be getting wider by the day but I can't ever see it stretching as far as rap.

Hi Nightfly

I must admit that there is some hip-hop that I don't mind. Being brought up where you were would certainly give you a much different perspective. What I do really enjoy is watching really good hip-hop dancers. I think that helps draw me to the music a bit more, but my knowledge is pretty much zilch. Rap, that's a bit harder and I agree with you about gangsat rap. What did surprise me is I saw Eminem's movie Eight Mile High (?) and really quite enjoyed it although it never inspired me to buy any of his music.

It's great to expand horizons and taste different samples, but if you don't like it you don't like it. It's sort of like reading a novel; if you get a third of the way through and you're not inspired then there is nothing that compels you to finish it. If one doesn't like it, then they don't like it. You don't have to listen to something ad nauseum in hope one day you'll finally like it! At least I'm proud to say I enjoy a much wider taste in music than I did ten years ago. I like to think that counts for something, even if it only counts for something to me.

Now, back to some of those artists that have been mentioned.

Yes back on topic: I've been thinking about- John Hiatt-Bring The Family

and from Rolly's List I like Iris Dement
Rick Danko and Levon Helm (both from THe Band)

and The Texas Tornados with the late Freddie Fender were great.Tex Mex at its best.

Yes, I found myself traveling down the path of the former artists from The Band last night. Robbie Robertson is another one from the Band who has done some good stuff. I stumbled on to Iris Dement a while back and enjoy her also. I am quite digging The Felice Brothers as well. That was a little charmer for me. The track Frankie's Gun gives me a chuckle. Now I guess it's off to check out John Hiatt -- haven't thought of him in years. Thanks Nightfly.

In my music wanderings through here I thought of T-Bone Burnett; I don't think I saw him mentioned. Two of his albums I have are Criminal Under My Own Hat and Proof Through The Night. Criminal is probably my more favourite or maybe that's because I've listened to it more...

Has anyone checked out Kasey Chambers yet? Maybe she's too country for some but her song Pony is a groover from Wayward Angel. I guess she's a bit special for me because she's an Aussie and I've seen her perform. (I have seen other great concerts, but unlike Firefly I wasn't lucky enough to be selling ice cream at the Fillmore.) They are a family operation and she's incredibly genuine and engaging with the audience. I'm curious to know if she trips anybody else's trigger. My feelings won't be hurt if you don't like her... No, really, they won't.

In the never ending pursuit of listening and learning I came across Kelly Joe Phelps. This is pushing the parameters of our genre, sub genre forum here, but I think there's enough to qualify. The album I listened to was Tunesmith Retrofit. Nice guitar work and an easy evening listening sound with a little bit of Bluegrass work thrown in. Anyone else familiar with him at all?

Hmm, I just made the last three posts. Is this due to time zone differences or am I having dialogue with myself...

Yes.
I have got her Carnival album which I have listened to on a couple of occasions, whilst as you say she may be a little on the mainstream side she's not quite as 'Yee Haw' country as some I have heard.

I have not come across Wayward Angel yet, I will leave that one until I have explored more of the ones on the list. The problem I seem to be having at the moment is that listening to so much new stuff is remembering which ones I like and those I'm not so keen on. I think I am going to have to start making notes.

I listened to Kathy Mattea's Untasted Honey album yesterday and would recommend that one. It is quite smooth and melodic, one to listen to with a good bottle to hand. Although the name did not ring a bell I realised when I heard 'Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses' that I knew this track from the past.

Timezone. With eight hours difference you are heading for bed just about the time I get up.
