Alright Nightfly! To hear you say you never thought you would get overwhelmed with a wealth of good recommendations means something must have gone right! Hey, I'm overwhelmed too. I start listening to someone, then I see other "like" artists and off I go...
As for the dialogue with myself Ashley, I was hoping maybe there were a few North Americans lurking around. It seems for a genre that should attract North Americans, there haven't been many who have popped in to have a look. Oh well, their loss. And thanks for finally letting me know someone has listened to Kasey. On ya, mate.

The album I listened to was Tunesmith Retrofit. Nice guitar work and an easy evening listening sound with a little bit of Bluegrass work thrown in. Anyone else familiar with him at all?
|
I wasn't,but I am now.
You caught my attention when you mentioned bluegrass.
I had a listen to the Tunesmith Retrofit album.
It sounds like it would be good, except for the awful quality copy of this album I have to listen to.
It sounds like he dropped one microphone inside the guitar, and was trying to eat another one.
I will have to get a better copy to appreciate this album.
I did however also listen to Kelly Joe Phelps-Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind.
This is an excellant album(and I have a much better quality copy of this too).
Not much bluegrass here, but the guitar playing is great.
The albums Slingshot Professionals and Lead Me On I haven't listened to yet,but I will.
In any case,Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind is a certain keeper, and I'm glad I've found it.
Thanks for the tip on Kelly Joe Phelps.

Hi Rolly
Glad you found some stuff you like. One thing I like about Sparks and allmusic.com is that you look up an artist and they have a list of "like artists". This is where I often find myself exploring names I haven't heard, so I'll give them a listen. It's how I get lead down the musical garden path so to speak. What's so wonderful is that, even though you have to listen to stuff and say, "I'll pass", you catch one and go, "Yup, that's a winner".
It really has been pleasing to know that so many good names have come out of this thread. I do have to thank Nightfly for encouraging me to give it a go and post the thread because it really has shot out a lot more than I was aware of, or could find. I also appreciate your contributions; gosh, I've downloaded so much lately I can't even remember them all! It's funny, sometimes I'm going through my library and I wonder, "Where did that come from?". So I even find stuff in my own library! You gotta like that.
I'm glad to see people are still dropping in here from time to time.

Listened to Kasey Chambers and liked her music, but not enough edge
for me in her voice and style. But that's just my personal taste I go
for honky tonk more.
Kelly Joe Phelps on the other hand is a keeper for me,he a great picker
if he's playing guitar or banjo. His songs are well crafted and performed well.
He is a artist that I will explore more.
And The Felice Bros. hit a homerun with me...great album,a real good listen.
Thanks for the recommend...

Hi Nightfly
Thanks for listening to Kasey and I appreciate your input on the honky tonk; that's something I enjoy too. Anyone a bit obscure you might recommend?
Yes, I am so pleased with the Felice Brothers. Now all we have to wait for is some more albums! Why couldn't they have a plethora of albums to choose from? Oh well, someone to follow for the future. Kelly Joe Phelps has some to choose from so that's good news; I also found two more on Millisong which are earlier albums. I'll get to those in due time. He does play his instruments well!

Hey Martinman,
Linda Gail Lewis (sister of Jerry Lee) is a real good Honky Tonk singer.
She also did a country album with Van Morrison that is quite enjoyable
and a real good listen...

Nightfly is not the only one being overwhelmed by the recommendations.
I am having trouble keeping up with checking them out, downloading and listening to it all.
Still keep them coming guys, I will try to my bit as well.

Thank you for that tip, Nightfly. I'm off to have a listen and see what other "like" artists are lurking in there. I don't remember if I mentioned Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose, which was produced by Jack White of White Stripes. If so, sorry for the repeat, but for those who do like older country artists, this is an album that has a fairly raw sound. Jack was careful to catch the essence of Loretta's voice and keeping the production process to a minimum. Also, it's the first album of her career that she every wrote entirely herself. I fancy it.
That's interesting what you say about an album with Van. He did one recently called Pay The Devil, which is all country. Sadly, I know a number of Van fans who found it lame... But when you're an artist like Van, you can just do darn well what pleases you without worrying about the fallout. These greats have paid their dues and it's all about doing what fancies them. Still...

Ashleyj, my good man. I do recall you commenting on an album with Willie and Emmylou. Now, she's as great as they get. Two albums I have of hers are early ones, Blue Kentucky Girl and Elite Hotel. If you don't have either and love Emmylou, I guarantee Blue Kentucky Girl for your quality listening ear. And should you not like it, I'll pay the airfare to send my assistant over to help you with the odd jobs that need doing around the house, and make sure there is a glass of red when you're done.
Speaking of which, in case I can't find it in this deluge, does someone remember that album? I didn't get to it; I got lost along the way.
