I always tell people who ask, "I like every type of music except country & western". It's not entirely true, but at least it's a line in the sand (one meant to be washed away by the tide, I guess),
Why would you tell everyone you don't like it if you do?

I might be wrong here, been known to be wrong before,
but I suspect you are concerned with what others may think if you "like country".
When it comes to music there is only one person whom you should be concerned with as to who likes it.
That is you.

I have only my mom to blame, she like C&W, so I have a few embedded in my mind:
I would think that you only have your mom to thank.
If you didn't like it,it would not be embedded into your mind.
So really she introduced you to something you like.
Now think about a song you are certain that you really don't like.
Bet you aren't humming along with that one.

I should also mention, every artist you've mentioned just now are artists I like quite a bit.
Of course it's only my opinion, but I'd say your mom has good taste in music!

I do.

Just for the record, we have been on this Country genre and sub-genres for some time now. I'm not sure it has to end, but I feel something new needs to be started to broaden my horizons and interests; something I strongly feel this music forum is about. Anyway, at this point I'm getting a bit tapped out on the Country end of things. I will pop back in now and then to have a look, but I believe Nightfly made reference to starting a new thread -- I can't remember exactly what (soul/funk perhaps?).

As I started this post due to the encouragement of two very valuable mentors, Nightfly and Ashleyj, I would really like to thank all of those who joined in on this and every contribution that was made. I would like to especially thank Kaeli, who started the whole idea off for me with her posting an Alt-female country thread some time ago. It is through here I wanted to explore a bit more. Thanks, Kaeli!

Martinman,

No reason this Thread has to end,we should just create others so that
people that are not into Country can contribute as well and put there
2 cents about things and their tastes.

I'd like one for rock, one for jazz and one for soul/funk - along with the African one you mentioned!

Yes Me Too,but I would like to see them started by members because
it is Your site to do as you please.

If one's are not created, I will resurrect some of My old post starters(because I still feel the same way about my basic picks then as now) and we will take off from there.

We have to excite our base with choices....

well, anybody would like to start with african? for an easy, and very pleasureable intro
i might suggest anything by ''Freshlyground'', a perfect start being the CD NOVUMLA,
and to get the taste, the titles 'Doo Be Doo' or 'Buttercup'.

also worth reading up on them, great story.

after that, heavier stuff. even on the same CD.

greets - henry

PS: i guess i should have started a new thread. this doesnt really fit under ''Country and
Alternative Country/Country Rock
'', does it?

Thanks - Martinman, that (alt-female) was one fun thread and I learned some new music that I like, at least pointed me toward.

Kaeli the dog is indeed a girl. I'm just your garden-variety music nut.

If this thread includes alt-folk/country then I'd throw out the 2008 release by Rodney Crowell. Sex & Gasoline. It's got some great alt-americana, sort of like Sonny Landreth with a better voice but not as good guitar. He is a great lyrical songwriter.

Fleet Foxes is another good indie alt-country group. If you like My Morning Jacket, then you'll like this one too. I would think...

I'd agree with Kaeli about recommending Rodney Crowell.

A former integral member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band for years as singer, excellent song-writer and guitarist, he has gone on to carve out a distinguished niche career in Alt. Country...

Some excellent albums along the way from this highly under - rated artist- suggestions - try the tracks ' Learning how to Fly ' and ' Earthbound ' and the title track from the album ' Fate's Right Hand '...
' Telephone Road ', ' Why don't we talk about It ', ' I wish it would Rain ' - and a great duet with Johnny Cash - ' I walk the Line - Revisited ' - from ' The Houston Kid '.
ALL of his strongest set - imho - ' The Outsider ' cd from 2005.
His latest as mentioned by Kaeli - ' Sex and Gasoline ' is up to his usual high standard...
And - unlike a lot of more mainstream Country artistes ( like Brooks and Dunn and Brad Paisley...) - he regularly tours the UK where he is popular.
