Smile Desert Island Discs - 04-19-2008, 10:52 PM

We did this awhile back, and I think we will do a new one for some of our
newer members. It gives you a good idea of everybody's musical tastes
and diversity's.And gives you a good idea for possible new music.

If you were being sent to a Desert Island and were allowed to bring
only 5 disc's(10 if you really want to),which ones and why.

Miles Davis-Kind of Blue -one of the greatest Jazz albums ever

Bob Marley-Legend- a perfect compilation of a great artist

The Beatles-Meet The Beatles-brings me back to great days of my youth

John Coltrane-A Love Supreme-a beautiful album of salvation and redemption

Muddy Waters -Live-got to have some blues and why not by "The Man"

I will do another 5 to get my 10 in..I need to think.....

Hmmm - that was last June, Nightfly, so I guess I count as a "newer member"

Melanie - Candles In The Rain - for the best ever version of Ruby Tuesday

Chumbawamba - Anarchy - to celebrate my escape from all Governments

Mafia K1 Fry - Jusqu'A La Mort - irony, and since I don't understand most of it, french rap never gets boring

Hawkwind - Quark, Strangeness And Charm - happy memories of seeing it live at Stonehenge in a very altered state

Prince Far-I - Cry Tuff vol 3 - both this and the Hawkwind: Night. Beach. Driftwood bonfire. PLAY LOUD. Bliss.

I actually had to think about this , for some time. I had an inital D/I list of 35, and I didn't even realize it. I tried NOT to take best ofs, but had to, in the end. No particular order here:

Nathan Angelo - Through Playing Me unsigned, but shouldn't be
Beatles : Abbey Road side 2, is a classic SONG
Renaissance - Turn Of The Cards for a bit of classical undertones
Dave Barnes - Brother, Bring The Sun just a great album
Led Zep - II mainly, because it contains Thank You
Frank Sinatra - Classic Sinatra: His Greatest Performances 1953-1960 contains most of his mid career classics.
Carole King - Music (no, NOT TAPESTRY!!) Mostly for one song (Song Of Long ago), should have been as big as Tapestry
Claudine Longet - Love is Blue , because she's beautiful , fun, and I felt I needed something quirky
Ari Hest - Story After Story This might possibly be my ONE D.I> disc. A great story teller
Daughtry If there is an album, that represents, what all Idols should strive to achieve, this is it.

And if I could somehow, smuggle in an extra:

Across the Universe Soundtrack Some great remakes here. Best, and most consistent tribute album, ever
or
Angela Bofill - Definitive for those intimate times....

Got to agree with you on this one Scotso. Think I've got to accept that jazz is just not my kind of thing,
Cheers,
Dave C
NB. My five to follow (after some careful thought)

I will get the first three out of the way without a seconds thought:

(1) Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (Superb album which got me through college)

(2) Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Master And Everyone (fantastic singer / song writer, could never get bored of this)

(3) Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - The Boatman`s Call (fantastic singer / song writer, could never get bored of this (déjà vu))

Final two are a lot more difficult to chose, but I'm going to have to go with:

(4) Decemberists - Picaresque (favourite album from my fav. Band)

(5) Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim. I know I shouldn't have a new album on this list, but I download 1 - 2 albums every day and yet after two months I still find myself listening to this album in it's entirety pretty much every day. Not done that with an album for several years so what the hell, it's coming with me.

Cheers,
Dave C

Never tried this one, but got several from their later 'folkier' days (A Singsong & A Scrap is my favourite). Never listened to this one as allmusic only give it a 6/10, shall go & get it now),
Cheers,
Dave C
