Summer Music - 05-25-2008, 11:06 PM

Does anyone have any favourite summer music?
For really hot summer days, I'd like to recommend an old album called Head To The Sky by Earth, Wind and Fire.
Don't worry if you don't like Earth, Wind and Fire - it's like nothing they've done before or since . . . more like an early Santana album in parts, with Latin rhythms and some excellent musicianship.
It doesn't work as well for dull, cold days but it's just the thing when the temperature rises.

Gaucho,

I always think of Sly and The Family Stone "Hot Fun in The Summer Time"
Love that song.

I love Earth Wind and Fire and their greatest hits is one of the greatest
"greatist hits" packages around. And I have the album you speak of,
a great recommend.

Thanks,

Nightfly

I can never get these band names straight - sorry, all before my time - so when I read Earth, Wind and Fire, I though of Blood, Sweat and Tears. I really love Al Kooper's "Soul of a Man". One of the best live albums I've ever heard.

Earth Wind and Fire..."September"-"After The Love is Gone"-"Fantasy"-
"Lets Groove Tonight" great singers Phillip Bailey(beautiful falsetto second only to Smokey) and Maurice White and The Phoeinix Horns

Al Kooper was a very nice man, jammed with him at Manny's music store(on 48th) in 1972 (quite a honor).I met him because my friends brother composed soundtracks and knew him well and introduced us.We played for about an hour. With drummer Carmen Appice who played with Jeff Back. They taped
it and it was a inhouse Tape called Jamming at Manny's...I had a cassette
copy that was eaten up by a car cassette.I am in the process of tracking down my friend in Utah who has a copy and possibly making a CD out of it.
It's a long shot,but it's a good long shot.

You're dropping some big names again there, my friend. Wouldn't mind a copy of that tape myself.

I'm not the greatest Earth, Wind and Fire fan but Head To The Sky is one of my all-time favourites. My ex-girlfriend took her vinyl album with her and I had to get a friend to find the CD for me in San Francisco many years ago because it wasn't available in the UK.

If I ever get a copy of that tape and it happens...you are sure to get a copy.
It's a bunch of Blues standards.
I was very lucky as a young player to have networked myself well with some
older players since,I myself was playing since I was 8, and came into my own
just when things were peaking.

And now you made me want to listen to that EWF cd.....thanks.

Change of season - 05-29-2008, 10:12 PM

OK, so nobody's in a summer mood. That's cool (literally). What about an autumn album? I'd nominate Solitude Standing by Suzanne Vega - beautiful, thoughtful album - and I happened to notice it has just appeared on Millisong in glorious 320kbs.
