Sun Kil Moon - April - 04-06-2008, 06:31 PM

As I type this, I'm listening to the new cd by Sun Kil Moon and it's a brilliant piece of musicianship as usual. Sun Kil Moon is basically one guy, Mark Kozelek, who's been around on the indie/alternative scene for awhile. His 1st band was the great, but largely ignored, Red House Painters and he plays mostly acoustic songs with heartfelt and bittersweet melodies and lyrics.

Here's a track off the previous cd, "Ghosts of the Great Highway" that eptomizes Mark Kozelek's trademark sound:

YouTube - Carry Me , Ohio - Sun Kil Moon

For something a little different, listen to his "What's Next To The Moon" cd. It's all acoustic covers of AC/DC songs (yes, AC/DC):

YouTube - Up To My Neck In You - Mark Kozelek

Sounds good. Would you recommend starting with the new album, or trying out some of their older stuff first?
Cheers,

Go for the new one. You can find it on MP3Fiesta. This guy reminds me of "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"-era Neil Young on this cd. If you like it and want to check out some of his earlier stuff, then here's a couple more:

Red House Painters - "Song For A Blue Guitar". Mostly a solo effort from him and has a couple of his trademark covers in it. He loves doing covers of other people's tunes, reinterpreting them, but keeping their essence intact. On this one, he does The Cars "All Mixed Up, Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs", and Yes "Long Distance Runaround"

Mark Kozelek - "The Little Drummer Boy". A solo, live album that captures him at his best.

Sun Kil Moon - "Tiny Cities". An entire cd of Modest Mouse covers and one of my favorite cds. I never get tired of listening to it. Guess Kozelek saw Modest Mouse in concert and loved them. He started doing some covers of them in live shows and finally released a whole cd of reworked, mostly acoustic versions of their songs.

I shall get over to fiesta now,

I just ordered this from Amazon. SKL's "Ghosts of the Great Highway" is one of my favorite albums in the last 5 or so years, and I hear the new one is even better. Can't wait.

Finally got around to Sun Kil Moon tonight..
"Carry Me,Ohio" is hauntingly beautiful..
As you said,he sounds like early Neil Young but more updated..his influences are clear.

I found "Ghosts of The Great Highway" and his newest one "April"(on
Mp3sale at very good prices)
just downloaded Ghosts and will DL April after I listen to this a couple of days..It is such a refreshing find and makes a great listen.

Thanks so much for the most excellent recommend!

Just got round to listening to this today. I did a compilation of the two Sun Kil Moon albums and I'm definitely impressed. The Neil Young influences are certainly there and I could even hear echoes of Nick Drake on some on the tracks. Good stuff.
