Two new great releases (not named Coldplay) - 06-14-2008, 07:56 PM

Some great new music has been coming out, and I have 2 recommends.

1) "Evil Urges" - My Morning Jacket - very solid, great to listen start to finish in one setting. Some of it flat out rocks (Remnants), but it's really diverse. This guy (Jim James) has an awesome voice, check out the song "I'm Amazed". I really liked "Z" from a few years back, and this ones a bit more commercial and "catchy", in a good way.

2) "22 Dreams" - Paul Weller - any new release by the Modfather gets my attention, and this certainly does not disappoint. It would be a double LP back in the old days, 21 songs. Although "Wildwood / Stanley Road / Heavy Soul" were close to perfection in my book, I like this because he trys some new styles and always has been innovative rather than going with the same formula. I'm a huge Weller fan, so I'm a bit biased but I like this one quite a bit. If he took the 15 best songs on this (leave out the spoken word stuff), it would be phenomenal.

I liked the earlier MMJ work ..."Z" showed a progression in style but
left me underwhelmed .I will definitely check out the new one because
I agree, I really like Jim James.

I will also check out the Paul Weller because, Hirs.Ute recommended it
as well.

Thanks Kaeli,
Just had a listen to My Morning Jacket and they sound good. Another band to investigate.
And you're right about Wild Wood, Stanley Road and Heavy Soul (haven't heard the new one yet). Nightfly should listen to them.

Glad to read some feedback about both of these new releases. Both have been in my Collection and I plan to spend some time with them tomorrow.

Thx

Might have spoken too soon there. Liked the first couple of tracks from My Morning Jacket but not sure about the rest. I'll listen to the other albums, though.

Check out their earlier works of MMJ,they are more alternative country
and rock a little more....

I spent a lot of time with MMJ's "It Still Moves", and started out liking it a lot, only for it to become rather tedious. Along came "Z" and that only solidified my impressions of the band. I like the Sons of Neil Young-type bands, like Sun Kil Moon, Songs-Ohia, etc., but this guy's voice sounds way too strained for me, like he's trying too hard to sing loud. I'm not planning to investigate any further with their new release.

I am going to try to let Paul Weller's new album grow on me. I love him in all his incarnations, but this album is a bit of a reach for me, although I understand why it might be considered his masterpiece by many.
