What's Your Favorite Cover - 08-31-2007, 11:13 AM

I like good covers of favorite songs. Most of us do - no argument there. However, what constitutes a "good" cover is where the controversy starts. For example, Dylan songs are probably covered more than most and there are die hard Dylan fans that would,if they could, burn the perpetrators. I quite liked the recent album of Dylan covers by Bryan Ferry titled 'Dylanesque'. I gave the CD to a Dylan fan friend who later informed me it was only fit to be used as a frisbee for his Kelpie! Still I really like it - familiar songs reinterpreted by a familiar talent. I recommend it.
Another Dylan cover I recommend is on the Patti Smith album "Twelve" which is twelve covers of a diverse and surprising collection of artists. Her interpretation of Dylan's "Changing of the Guard" is brilliant.
So, what's everyones' favorite cover?

Hi Squash

Very good idea to begin a thread about covers.

I think Dylanesque is a very good one. I have listened a hundred times since was released.

About album covers, I think I won't be original:

Annie Lennox - Medusa (I like a lot 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' version)
Rod Stewart - Still The Same... Great Rock Classics Of Our Time

About Dylan covers, maybe the problem with Dylan is that anyone performs his songs in a way that is "tastier" than his own (but I still prefer Dylan singing his own songs). A few years ago, a group of Catalan artists released two terrific albums of Dylan covers (most of them in Catalan, of course): "Els Miralls de Dylan (Dylan's Mirrors)".

And about single songs covers, my favs are:

Peral Jam - Rockin' In The Free World (Neil Young Cover)
Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie Cover)

An interesting selection, Kalvin. The Patti Smith album I mentioned in my first post has a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" you might be interested in.
I couldn't find the Catalonian Dylan covers you mentioned. Any pointers?

Cheers,

My favorite Dylan cover is " My Back Pages" as done by the Byrds..
In 1966 it turned me on to Dylan and The Byrds and really helped
change my young musical direction.

You mentioned Patti Smith ..one of my favorite covers by her was the
Van Morrison classic "Gloria" and I really enjoyed "Twelve" it gives
some insight into Patti Smith the artist, and where she gets her inspiration..and I enjoyed Bryan Ferry's refreshing cover's of Dylan material.

I'm sorry I drew a blank on this one, but I know if I think long and
hard ....some of those old brain cells will kick in...

Cheers,
I've realised they are available at emusic europe, but I don't think if they are also at other emusic sites. If you are interested, PM'me your address and I can send you a CD with these covers.

Kalvin

P.S.: Nightfly, sure I will give emusic a chance. I've found a lot of catalonian & spainsh artists only available there. That was the piece that I needed to complete the jigsaw.

OMG I can't believe how thick I was being, there was me about to write about the wonderful covers that Roger Dean produced for the Yes albums and then reality hit Ah well might be a good thread in it's own right.

Anyway, this may be a bit too English and parochial (Nightfly please tell me if I'm being too local), but after the British Musician Ian Drury sadly died many of his friends covered track from his finest album "New Boots and Panties".

The album features tracks from such musicians as Sinead O'Connor, Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Cerys Matthews and others, but my absolute favourite is Billy Bragg and The Blokes performing "Billericay Dickie". It's, at the same time, both faithful to the original and completely different at the same time. It's like the track has been transferred to an Egyptian Bazaar. I'm sure Ian would have approved.

Hi Kalvin, very kind of you to offer. However, I found one of the CD's on emusic and gave it a listen - really liked it and now have it in my collection. The fact that most of the lyrics are in Catalonian just make the experience that much more interesting and enjoyable.
I think Bob would approve too

Hi Nightfly, A poor spelling mistake probably influenced by Squash54's recommendation to imbibe of sipping water that has been filtered through a grape vine . You're absolutely right it's Dury not Drury.

As an added piece of useless information, Track 10 on the album "Blackmail Man" is covered by Keith Allen who is Lilly Allen's dad. Not known for his singing (and certainly never will be if you hear the track ) more for being a completely hedonistic rabble rouser and all round loud bloke

Before this thread dies of natural causes, allow me to play this last post .
At a dinner party last night the subject of covers came up and, specifically, what song people thought had been covered more than any other. Most agreed Danny Boy would be right up there. In fact our host declared it was one of his favorite songs and that he had more than 70 versions in his collection. 'Great', I said 'Play the one by Dianna Krall.' From the look on his face I immediately realised two things: firstly, he didn't have it and second, I shouldn't expect another invitation any time soon.
If you want to hear a great interpretation of this ancient tune you will find Krall's version on Sparks buried in an excellent Chieftans album called 'Tears of Stone'.
Of course, if you want to hear it sung with the passion of an Irishman then I recommend Christy Moore's poetic interpretation, also on Sparks.
As a matter of fact any Guiness drinkers on this forum should have a listen to Moore's song 'Delerium Tremens' off his great 'Live at the Point' album .
