Corrupt mp3? - 02-01-2008, 04:41 PM

I have a friend who has downloaded 3 albums recently from mp3sparks , and when downloaded they have been added to iTunes automatically. Problem is that he says that 3 weeks later they won't play at all! He uses a PC and is getting a corrupt file message. Reckons his Virus checker is fine and up to date.

Anyone any idea what could be happening with this?

thanks

Has he ever managed to play the files, or do you mean the files played fine at first, but became corrupted 3 weeks later?
If he has never managed to play them, he might have downloaded them in the 384kbps format. That's not standard MP3 (the highest bitrate allowed by the standard is 320kbps) and cannot be played in most players. There are ways to convert those files to normal MP3 files, but I can't immediately find the posts on this forum that refer to this.
If the files played fine at first and now they don't, then the only reasonable explanation is that there's something wrong with his PC...

Indeed, I probably skipped that search result because of the thread's title. Here's a direct link to the post
Of course, that post specifically explains how to do it in Mac OS X. However, there must also be an installer for command-line LAME for Windows somewhere, and for the rest the steps would be the same. And otherwise, you should be able to decode the files with any audio program based on LAME.

Aaaagh it's the dreaded non-working links again... - 02-02-2008, 07:14 PM

I think the page number 6 in RedSmurf's link means that he's displaying 20 posts per page rather than the default of 10. The so-called Permalinks are just about useless because of this; they only work reliably if everybody uses the same display settings.

It's much safer to use the PostLink - right click on the post number (#xy( and Copy Shortcut - and just link to the single post. Then a reader can click on the Thread Link to see the following posts.

In this case, I think http://www.aom3.org/forum/9080-post116.html should work for everyone

Ahhh! I somehow never noticed the link back to thread in the single post view. Which is why I gave the post # in my original message. I didn't know there was a way to go back up to the tread.

Yup, that works nicely too

Since I'm already moaning about the way the forum works: it's really annoying how when I edited my previous post, your quote of it didn't change. So not only do I look like a total numpty, I look like a total numpty who's tried to cover his tracks, and failed

I guess there are some advantages to being a Moderator after all...

Hi Dave C

Rub it in, why don't you?

(Hint: compare my post to vik's quote of it)

EDIT: Error Between Chair And Computer (EBCAC) is in fact deprecated in favour of Error Between Chair And Keyboard (EBCAK), presumably to avoid confusion with the East Belfast Coarse Angling Club.
