Rambling newbie -
07-07-2007, 07:02 PM
I'm new to this forum and this may be a ramble of sorts, but although I've been reading some of the posts about the demise of AllOfMP3, sad as I am about that, I discovered that MP3Sparks was AOM3 in disguise and for a very, very short period of time, managed to get some tunes, only to discover the next day it was down, and I'm hoping not permanently. Then, my beautiful daughter, who periodically comes out of her dungeon, announced that I have to download AllTunes to get access to the AOM3 catalogue. Well, that's all fine and dandy, except AllTunes is not available to Windows 98 platforms which makes me because now not only do I not seem to get access to MP3Sparks, although from reading a recent sticky topic about this, this isn't a permanent "no access zone" - phew - if AllTunes is how I get access to my fav tunes, how can I do this if it's not compatible with my windows platform??

There is nothing you can do right now except...upgrade To windows Xp
but sounds like you really don't want to do that...until Mp3sparks comes
back up and of course we have no idea ..when that is..that is when you will
have access again..sorry there aren't many options for most of us at
this time....But weren't you thinking about upgrading your operating
system one day

I am not one who EVER likes to support Microsoft, because I think they are a very predatory business. However, I have to urge you to upgrade to XP. It isn't the latest and greatest anymore, so you can probably find a copy for not so much money, and it is so very very much more stable than Win98. It is like a completely different world. Win98 to XP is one upgrade that is actually worth the money.

I would advise to upgrade to Win2K instead. XP is nothing more than Win2000, but with extra useless features and annoyances. Nearly anything that runs in XP will also run in 2000. Plus, it will probably run smoother than XP on your (supposedly) old PC without the need to tweak it. Of course it's not sold anymore, but maybe you can get an old installation CD from eBay.

Before you go into too much complaining, I would point out that often times, statements about "runs on X" are there because of testing or support requirements. They can't effectively test or support AllTunes for Win98, so they state "XP/2000".
However ... AllTunes seems to run just fine on at least one 98 system I've seen. Just don't expect to get any response to complaints involving the software.
That said, the advice about upgrading is solid. If you still are running 98, then at a minimum you should run 98SE, it should be as fully patched as possible (look for the unofficial "service packs"), it should run NATted behind a router (no DMZ), and IE should have its settings made so tight that most sites don't work while you run Firefox. (IE is just too close to the OS.) You *can* run 98 effectively, particularly on older hardware, but it actually requires more expertise than newer versions. It's getting next to impossible to find anti-virus for it now, so lock down IE, and be judicious in your choice of software. You're running software that's nearly 10 years old, so you are your own technical support now.

RestlessWeasel
I have installed this on a WINME machine (the basterd child of MS), do you have 98SE??
If your computer came out with WIN98SE to begin with, your processor is more then likely slow, and your memory (RAM) is probably small, like mine!!!! XP is a processor/memory hog. 2000 (not quite as power hungry as XP, and looks like old classic windows) was built off of WINNT as was WINXP,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT now VISTA is here, and of right now in my opinion, and many others, really sucks, even after the very late release......it will need a couple SP releases........................................
I don't want you to mess up your machine but did you try to install alltunes.exe ???

Oh my ... My sypmpathies on WINME..I used it for a year when I bought a new..computer....(had problems with memory usage and linkage even after expanding mem...always stalling and crashing)...then put in 20000...great OS...same machine always stayed up..Using XP now with new machine
stable but it is a hog...needs a lot of memory...listen I think we all
gave excellent advice..but if you notice RestlessWeasel never returned for a response or a thankyou....I guess he knows himself well
But we all had a good time talking about operating systems...something
that does come up from time to time with newbies...so he served a good
purpose here if he wanted to or not..
Anybody else got Windows OS advice to make machines more efficient
or related to Alltunes or Downloading..
Thanks to all,
Nightfly

I work on computers for a living, and anymore computers are throw away, a lot of the problems people have are from the sorce, (Dell , HP/Compaq, Gateway, Emachine, ect.................) because they are preloaded with all the CRAP THEY get a kick back on.
If you want a good computer, build one yourself, or get a GOOD guy to do it,
get a C L E A N O E M L O A D of the operating system, then you can add all the junk you want,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, yourself, and know when it's messed up.......................YOU MUST HAVE SOME ANTIVIRUS, ANTISPYWARE/ADWARE protection, THE INTERNET IS WONDERFUL AND EXTREMELY TERRIBLE/HARMFULL AT THE SAME TIME....................
Nightfly, sorry , not going off on you,,,,,,,,, I work on broken computers all the time, and I think all computers suck,at least most of the time
sept maybe for MUSIC

Do Not be Sorry..I am in total agreement ..I was A DP manager for
many years and a Mainframe MVS specialist..I am now a dinosaur in the field. .
I was also in charge of a large help desk for a hospital in the above position
and I know that most computers are nothing but trouble IF not maintained
properly...My techs were very busy..indeed...But I had a IBM on my desk for 8years and was the best machine with windows NT 95..enjoyed the challenge of keeping it working I guess..lol..loved upgrading..would take parts from
new machines being tossed..
And I agree the commercial machines are so bogged down with garbage...
but I can not build a machine anymore..you're right I could get help and get
more bang and better software..
Thanks for the response,
Nightfly
