Still DL'ing entire albums or now just tracks? - 06-12-2008, 02:46 PM

So now I've got some decent bandwidth back in my pocket and I'm filling up my Collections bin with new and old releases to check out for downloading. I'm feeling a little stingy though, and given my newly developed love for playing tracks through an iPod or iTunes via customized playlists, I am tempted to grab only the tracks I like and leave the weaker ones behind.

This goes against my lifelong habit of purchasing entire releases and hopefully finding the time to explore it as a full dose, but given the changes in my listening habits, the industry collapse of AOR (mostly); and the unfortunate (and debatable) fact that many artists apparently can't create a full album of decent tracks, I am very, very tempted to be more selective and save my bits and bites.

How about you?

I rarely download entire albums these days. I've got pretty good at recognizing tracks I'm never going to like.

I'm pretty much nuts about this, and have to take the whole album..

But on greatest hits packages..I will knock out the fillers..

For the most part, DL'ng entire albums. Mostly out of habit since when I used to buy music (on vinyl), I would listen for the artist's intent. With that said, time is precious and I don't have enough of it (or credits) to listen to a whole album with the concentration of my younger days.

So I try to DL specific tracks and such, but now finding myself looking for Greatest Hits, Compilations so that I don't get too much filler.

But I still look for entire albums (primarily) and DL the singles.....

Guess I still go LP & 45 shopping......

Lead, follow or get out of the way!

What I normally do is on greatest hits where I am exploring a new group I listen to most of the music and end up buying the whole album. If I know the band already though I almost always go song by song. The other thing is I hate to think that I may have missed something I really like just based on first impressions or because of the mood I was in.

Back when mp3Fiesta was selling whole albums for $0.99, I downloaded full albums and took my chances that I would like all (or most) of what I heard. Now they've doubled their prices and I've stopped doing that.

I know, I know. $1.98 is still cheap for a full album, but paying more than a dollar just took all the fun out of it.

I thought if I boycotted Fiesta for awhile, they'd lower their prices, but unfortunately they didn't.

I'm sure they lost plenty of business when the payment options started opening up again. I signed up for mp3 fiesta during the "drought" but couldn't bring myself to download at less than 320 kbps.

Ditto for me my friend. I've always been annoyed how many albums would have two or three decent tracks and everything else is garbage. That's why this whole industry has to rethink marketing their products, no?

These days if there are albums I am not familiar with, I preview them first, and just download the songs that I like, and leave the ones I am not so keen on.
It`s always worth listening to the whole album though, as you do find some hidden gems - there are plenty of great album tracks out there that were never released as singles.

I've done that for some albums too. If I'm not sure about liking the lesser tracks I've left it in my collections folder so I can go back and fill out the tracks later. It's worked well, as I've actually done just that for some albums and also been glad I haven't for others, as my adoration of even the stronger tracks was only fleeting...
