By the way, I read somewhere that dwarVEs appears only in the works of Tolkien. The rest of the world spells it as dwarFs... regardless of their renown as.. what does that mean again?

No he can't.

I think you will find that this form first appeared in Tolk's work. The two forms are generally accepted as interchangeable in modern English .
