Cool Chad! Thanks much for this.

Do you have applecare, or are you having to get it fixed yourself? I got my ipod as a gift, and it came with applecare too - but I've never used it even though I had to replace earphones. Just bought them myself. Do you reckon it's worth exploring?

my ipod is 2nd generation so it is probably 6 years old. they did not even have apple care then. i called apple and they said there are not authorized repair dealers in montana. basicaly they told me to throw the ipod away and buy a new one. that was a couple of years ago. so i sent it to the link i posted and they replaced the headphone jack and put a new battery in it and im sure they downloaded all my music. im sure applecare is a great deal because apple to told me that these devices are not built to last. they said that your lucky if you get 4 years out of your device. that is for the first few generations, the new devices might have a longer shelf life..thanks and i have posted the new list.

thanks,
chad

They won't tell you much at Apple that doesn't suit their own purposes, you know? When my PC crashed and I lost all my music, it was on my iPod, but when I called they told me there is no way to recover it because you can't copy from iPod back on your PC. It must have been 20 GB of music or something like that. They said that's the way iPods are built in order to prevent music theft (as if DRM isn't enough). So I had to spend a day surfing the web and I finally procured this software called The Red Chair which puts your music straight back onto your computer, playlists even preserved (I think). Likewise, at the Apple store they assured me there is no way to sync your ipod to your computer unless you have iTunes - that's total baloney, too. I got this software called X-Play for $20 that syncs it perfectly, playlists and podcasts and all.

Anyway what I am saying is their job is to sell more devices and get you to spend more money, and it has been my experience they won't be helpful if you have a problem. That's why I am glad I found your post about how your problem got solved elsewhere - I will keep it in mind if/when this ever comes up.

I laughed when you said they probably downloaded all your music. LOL!! I am sure they did; DRM-free, of course!

Thanks for posting a new list. Let's collect more names and I will send it on tomorrow.

Holy cow, who is in the new picture?? Awesome!

All the music on the ipod is stored in a Hidden folder. If you simply change your settings to view Hidden files, all the music is at your finger tips. Even without the special software, you can easily retrieve it all. On a couple of occasions I've taken a friend's ipod to swap music

When I stumbled across those "hidden" folders on the second day of owning my ipod, I was in splits. A hidden folder is the mighty iPod's impenetrable mechanism that prevents you from copying music? Surely that's Apple's way to have a giggle at the RIAA as well?

Hi Vik,
okay, I have looked all though my ipod and I can not find any menu which says 'view Hidden files'. Am I doing something wrong or is it not present on my ipod (80G, latest model (I think))?
Cheers,
Dave C

Hi Dave

I don't have any IPOD (and probably I will never have), but one of my job mates has one. When you connect it to your PC, go to Tools\Folder Options in the windows explorer, and then click "view" -> view Hidden Files. I guess this could be the options at your PC or something similar, because our PC's are in spanish.

I don't know if this will work, but while Vik gives you a better answer...

Yep, that's right. Just google for "ipod hidden files". You'll see a million links on the subject.

Here's one for Windows I picked at random from the results :-

How to get your songs off your Windows iPod - CNET.com

Basically, all your music is in the iPod_Control folder.

I've got a mac, and there's a different way for viewing your hidden files. Also easy.

I've got a stupid question that I should probably know the answer to but I don't. When an iPod battery decides it's had enough, and it plays it's last track, will it still play if it's connected to a car headunit and powered through the headunit or a car charger?
