You could also do this
Sounds like a good plan, except for a few "minor" details which probally only apply to me.
1.These are windows applications you've mentioned.
I can run them using wine, but there are plenty of linux equivalants.
2.The CD's are not the originals, they have been created from .ogg and .mp3.

With the exception of the extreme high quality of image files from original CD's,jukes has been fitting the bill quite well.
Jukes will accept and catalogue the entire music collection I have on the lappy disc which is around 64GB last I checked.

Nevertheless, great advice for someone who has the original cd's and running windows.
I might think about using .flac though.
How many TB drives did you say I would need?

Just curious.
Does Slysoft CloneCD compress to a specific format before it creates the .iso?
Would a .wav file be larger than the .iso created by Slysoft CloneCD?
Reason I ask is that the term "image file" can be decieving sometimes.

Now if you could recommend a good in dash .mp3 player for my car?

It doesn't sound like you need as many as I had initially figured

When using CloneCD, a file folder containing three files is created. It takes anywhere from 4 to 7 minutes (depending on length). The file folder could look like this:

Cliff Martinez-Solaris (Soundtrack).ccd 3 KB
Cliff Martinez-Solaris (Soundtrack).img 450,314 KB
Cliff Martinez-Solaris (Soundtrack).sub 18,381 KB

A CD ripped to .wav is approximately the same size as an image file of the same CD...

Cliff Martinez-Solaris (Soundtrack) .wav folder 450,317 KB

rolly, any idea if this one is for sale where you are?

- Parrot RK8200 - A complete, integrated Bluetooth car stereo

anything much better and more dedicated to music you might not find.

I did find some USA retailers
http://www.parrot.com/usa/wheretobuy#usa
I didn't find that exact model, but I see there are a few other models available that .mp3 players can be hooked up to via hardwire and also usb.

The usb models also charge the mp3 player battery.
This would be a good choice if I have to use a mp3 player.
I hate making decisions.

I was very happy with what I got out of this thread.........I went for an Alpine CDE-9871RH CD Player (from Halfords)
So I know now of a particular model to look for!

I am one of the few who play CD's by the sound of it, I burn ALL my music to CD-R.

Although I mainly use the two CD players on my computer and the good one in my car, sometimes I fire up my VERY good one in the spare bedroom, which consists of :-

Sony XA555ES CD player (£1000)
"BIG" Floorstanding Kelly KT3 speakers (£1200)
Exposure XX amp. (£1000)
Good quality cables/phono's
All bought in sales (half price) at different times a few years ago, please believe when I tell you that this does Rock N Roll.
Makes an old man happy.

Mott The Hoople
"Fabulous band - on a good night the best in the world, and more influential than anyone at the time dared believe..." - Pete Frame (Rock Family Trees)

chris, your setup (spare bedroom?) 'sounds' great. specially the speakers, even
though by now almost vintage. if you got those at half price, congrats. envy, though.

burning on CD-Rs: used to do that too. but now the first ones, burned some 8-12
years ago, start failing. some due to scratches, others due to something that looks
like a fungus growing in from the side into the dye, others look perfect, but wont play
(anyhwere) anymore. so i have started to become careful about backups, HDDs
becoming cheaper by the day.

Henry, would Chris be able to hook all (or parts) of his Hi-Fi to the computer and STILL be able to do as described below?

1. Install Slysoft CloneCD on his laptop/PC.

2. Create image files of all of his CD's.

3. Put these image files onto X numbers of 1TB external hard drives.

4. Install Virtual Clone Drive (or similar (Alcohol 120% or DAEMON Tools, for instance)).

5. Mount images from there (Alcohol 120% can mount 30 or so at a time).

6. Use his default media player to play his music in random (or preferred) order.

absolutely. not sure how serious your question is, and why, but he might have
some initial hiccups if he is not used to those things, but once he has it setup,
it would run smoothly and without much intervention, and with great, if not
imens, comfort. also, expenses are quite controlable on this, even if he should
use a NAS/raid combination for safetys sake.
