hook all (or parts) of his Hi-Fi to the computer and STILL be able to do as described below
Not to intentionally butt in here, but I noticed one detail that Chris mentioned.
Quote:
I burn ALL my music to CD-R.
I take this to mean he has music files he creates cd's from,as do I,not that he has original cd's.
If he indeed does have mp3 files,or FLAC,APE,etc, why would someone need to create an image from any of the formats?

I have started using a laptop to hook up to my home stereo.
From the laptop,or a desktop if you found room for it,one could use any application they want.
I use jukes.

I did have the option to stream,or send several different streams, music all over my house.
I had no need for this so I simply went with a Y-cable to my amp.
The Y-cable was also much less complicated.
And the lappy looks like it belongs there next to the audio equipment.

Thanks for the explanation, Henry

Hi rolly

I read it as if Chris initially had had the original CD's, copied them (not ripping them into this or that format) and then either been giving them away or selling them on eBay (or wherever)...?

And now his problem was that they were getting either too scratched or fungous to be played...?

Let's see what Chris has to say about this...

THATS going the be the only important thing. and not only in what form he
has his collection, and the many other technical points, but also what he feels most
comfortable with.

most of my own sytems are really up-to-date, but you know, how much i enjoy
going thru my old record (ie LP) collection, and, by hand, putting them on an old
but reconditioned record player, and go thru them, groove by groove?

yes, the softy again.

Too many questions?
8-12 years FFS, I may not live that long.
All my new stuff I buy, which is normally say box sets, I do a straight copy to CDR, most of the downloaded stuff goes the same way, that way I can use when I want where I want, Hi-Fi, car etc.

All downloaded music is backed up either as a Zip file (sale/millisong) or straight onto my 250G external hard drive. So if I am still around in 8-12 years, I could burn another.

With only say 10p for a Sony CDR and £15 for a Liteon burner that is my prefered method, only very occasionally listen to a mp3 player.

It is fair to say because it is cheap, some stuff will never be played more than once, I have tried music I would not have listened to a few years ago, but at say 50p an album I am happy to give it a whirl and then throw it away if neccessary!

I have always liked music but really come back into it in the last 10-15 years, especially the last 2 years with the Russian stuff.

Regards All.

chris, if you are happy with your system, happy with the sound, and happy with
the music, there is no point changing anything, true. i guess solaris was only trying
to point out there would be easier, and safer ways to handle and arrange your
music. including possible catalogueing it and knowing what you have and what is
where, on the tip of your finger. only you know whats right for you, only you
can decide.

Thanks Vik,

At the moment all things Procol Harum and Mott The Hoople are the loves of my life at the moment in music.
