CD Players - 04-26-2007, 04:45 AM

Does anyone still own a regular cd player any more? They seem to be dying out pretty quickly around here, thanks to mp3 players.

I have a cd in a hi-fi, but I rarely listen to it. No need for cd players anymore really. On the other hand, I have a couple of cassette players because a) I have some tapes I can't get cd/digital copies of and b) I'm too lazy to convert them to digital just yet.

Computers have taken over both home and portable music areas. Computers are needed to make music portable (e.g. to transfer to mp3 players) so it makes sense for the home music system to be built around the PC.

You can get laptops I think where you can play cds without having the computer fully switched on (a Toshiba media centre laptop had this feature I think).

So I think there will be a time when all PCs could potentially have huge speakers and subwoofers connected to them, as well as music control buttons/lcd screen on the front of the PC and a remote to use it from a distance. You'll be able to play cds and maybe access the designated hard drive music folder without the computer being switched on (I mean without using the full power of motherboard, graphics, memory, processor etc). Maybe there's a PC already out like that?

For those who need a "state of the art" sound reproduction CD players are still a need. Don't forget that in a sound system, you alway listen to the weakest ring. Mp3 and any other compressed file will never satisfy a good ear. Of course hi-fi system are step by step less popular as new digital technologies are reaching a lot of people with low cost players. This doesn't mean it's a good thing. If we think about music, it is, as it lets music reach many people. If you consider sound quality, it's not. Moreover, if you get used to a bad sound, you can't even understand the difference. I just hope we will be able to enjoy music in the future without loosing quality.

P.S.
I prefer DAT to CD and, even if it is a nosense, I'm still in love with LPs.

Got one of the original Phillips CD players back in around 1989 and it is still going strong.

Remember the guy tried to sell me an extended warranty "As the laser can go on these things" that cost as much as the player, needless to say nearly 20 years later it's still fine .

I hardly know anyone who uses a cd player now. All i hear is of my mp3 players. I guess people sold of their cds players a long time back and got themselves a mp3 player.

I tend to agree with you on that sentiment. I still have a cd player in my car. But they seem to be going by the wayside. Mp3 players are so much more versatile and you can fit so many more songs into one small space.

I have a 301 cd carausel that I use.
Also a laptop hooked up to the same stereo.
The cd player is on in a split second, whilst I have to wait for the lappy to boot.
So I use the cd player more often.

Why buy a cd player anyway unless it's something like the 301 carausel?
A dvd player works fine as well, and does more than just play a cd.

I have a cd player in my car also.
I am seriously thinking about going with a .mp3 player though.
There are cd's floating about all over the place.
What a mess!

1. Install Slysoft CloneCD on your laptop

2. Create image files of all your CD's

3. Put these image files onto X numbers of 1TB external hard drives

4. Install Virtual Clone Drive (or similar (for instance Alcohol 120% or DAEMON Tools))

5. Mount images from there (Alcohol 120% can mount 30 or so at a time)

6. Use your default media player to play your music in random (or preferred) order
