The End Has Come - I Broke My MP3 Player -
08-14-2007, 10:59 PM
Well I havn't broken it, i broke the headphone jack, so now the headphone jack is lose and you can't hear anything when you try and plug in the headphones I feel like crying now.
Its a cowon x5 60GB HDD MP3 player, which is the only player that plays FLAC, OGG etc.. straight out the box.
What do i do?
I'm thinking of seeing if i can claim on insurance.
And whats even worse, if i have to buy a new mp3 player, there is none on the market that features both a big HD and play FLAC, OGG
Tis' a bad day...

Insurance sounds good.
Failing that you could do what we all used to do, back in the day, which is mend things when we broke them. Very dernier siecle, I know. If you have one, Neighborhood Geeks are good for that sort of thing. Or you could even try Cowon.
Have you thought of eBay? There's a 30GB coming up in a couple of days. And if you've got the bucks to burn, you could just buy a new one.
I suspect your question was rhetorical, and your post is really a scream of pain. Even if no-one else here sympathises, I do, even though the nearest thing I own to a personal music player is an old Walkman with leaking batteries. Please don't cry.

My condolences ..I always wondered how you played your Flac and OGG's
Now I know...Sound's like it's worth having your old friend repaired.
and then get a back up like GM said of 30gb for such emergency's..
You'll have this cleared up in no time..

Vibez plays FLAC files without using Rockbox or anything else and they're beautifully designed

I received my 60 GB iPod as a birthday gift 2 1/2 years ago and I used to have nightmares about it being stolen, or breaking, or the battery wearing out. I literally didn't know what I would do. The battery still works, nothing's wrong with it, but I don't have nightmares anymore because 1) I have a couple other mp3 players, including the Sandisk 10 GB 280R which I actually use more often and 2) I figure I could always get the 80 GB iPod video if anything happened! It's always good to have a backup, and also the good news is with the current advances in technology, you could always end up getting a better model.
That said, I sympathize and I know we're all anxious to find out how you solve this problem.

Since the dawn of the walkman, Murphy's Law states that when you drop such a device it always lands on the headphone jack. However, the damage can usually be fixed quite easily by any electronics techie. Even if the part is not readily available a new headphone jack (about $3 from Jaycar) can be wired in through the aperature of the damaged jack. The end result is a portable player that has a cute little tail which, being flexible, is a design improvement over the original, imho.

Sorry to hear this
Back in the sony walkman days - remember those ? - I often had problems with headphone jacks - presumably we are talking the 'female' part in the box itself that is loose. If you jiggled your headphone jack about a bit you got an intermittant sound?? - Anyways a quick visit to an electronics man (IT guy??) with a small soldering iron often cured the problem by re-anchoring the jack.
Irivers support OGG but not sure about FLAC (i think not)

Dear aom3,
I am very sorry to hear of your impeding sad loss, but on the bright side I am led to believe you are one of the wealthier patrons on here so it should be a mere drop in the Ocean to someone like yourself.
