Headphones Can Block Pacemakers - 11-11-2008, 11:16 PM

From The Register

Quote:
US researchers have warned that the magnets in iPod headphones and those used by other MP3 devices "may interfere with heart pacemakers and implantable defibrillators".

A team led by Dr William Maisel of the Medical Device Safety Institute at Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston tested eight models of MP3 cans on 60 defibrillator and pacemaker patients by placing the headphones on their volunteers' chests, "directly over" the heart-assisting devices.

Reuters explains: "The headphones interfered with the heart devices in about a quarter of the patients - 14 of the 60 - and interference was twice as likely in those with a defibrillator than with a pacemaker."

I was at a Cardiac center today I had to take more tests and asked last time why I couldn't bring a MP3player or there was no use of cell phones. It
creates havoc with the Equipment and I was told that devices can
change the outcomes of the tests given, but they were not specific.
This sheds a little bit of information to some of the reason why.

Thank you,

Thank you Ashley and Chris,

One small problem, but I will be here for quite a long while posting regardless..

But at least all those tests are over and I can get on with it.

All and all, I'm pretty lucky considering some of my past history,so I'm
actually quite happy.

How are you Sir. and your aching back?

That's really good news, apart from the small problem that is.

I'm fine thanks Nightfly and the back is much better, just a bit of an ache now and again, should be fine by the weekend.

Really glad to hear.

I know young Vik finds our conversations boring....

But I enjoy the civility and common care.
