Review - Samsung Q1 Music/Video Player - 11-25-2008, 11:30 PM

Silly names notwithstanding, Samsung's recent MP3 players have been a decent enough bunch. Both the YP-P2 and YP-T10 left us reasonably impressed. The new kid on the block is the YP-Q1, a player that fits in between the two previous models and is the standard bearer for Samsung's latest sound technology.

For our money, the Q1 is one of the most visually attractive MP3 players on the market. Sleek, svelte and housing a 2.4in, 320 x 240 screen in a smooth and curvaceous body that measures 98 x 50 x 11mm and weighs 61g, it looks great in either black, white or silver, and challenges SanDisk's Sansa Fuze for Register Hardware's Best Made MP3 Player award.

External controls have been reduced to a minimum in the quest to keep the Q1 as aquiline as possible, so all you get is an on/off/lock slider on the right, and a 3.5mm 'phones jack and proprietary Samsung USB port at the bottom.

In fact, apart from that score line you can see running along the underside of the diamond – which is purely decorative – the entire face of the Q1 is absolutely smooth and solid.

Since the Q1 doesn't cater for memory expansion, you'd be wasting your time looking for a MicroSD slot. You have to make do with the 4, 8 or 16GB the player comes with.

Look very nice GM, but unfortunately the capacity is not there.

I am looking for something to replace my 30Gb Zen Vision M as it is becoming a little crowded in there.
The only one I can find is the iPod Classic 120Gb - I have an inbuilt abhorrence of anything Apple but it seems that I will just have to bite the bullet and line My Jobbs' pocket even more!

Meanwhile I am still looking.

I would not but a mp3player no matter how nice, without it taking
expandable SD cards. The SD cards are getting larger in space and cheaper.

Crippled inside - 11-27-2008, 12:45 AM

It's certainly a cute little thing, but the memory limitations - both internal and external - are absurd. Given that they describe this model as midrange, I hate to think how crippled the low-end one must be

That is certainly a way to go Nightfly.

As you say they are getting larger but as for the really large capacity ones i.e. 32Gb they are still nearly £100 here in the UK.

Unfortunately my Zen player can't take cards. When I bought it a couple of years ago I thought I would never fill 30Gb, so external storage was not a factor. How wrong can one be!
If it could then a 32Gb card would double the storage space available.

Perhaps I should be thinking of a smaller device that takes SD cards rather than the 120Gb iPod.

I buy SD cards like "cassettes" (remember them) and pop them in, they have different themes and genres.A practical solution for me personally....

It does sound like a good idea.
I must admit I do like to have all my collection with me at work as I have no idea what I want to listen to until I sit down a lunch time. The only drawback though is the more albums there are on the device the longer it takes to chose something.
Sometimes I just give up and hit Album Of The Day and see what it offers me.
